There's a hierarchy to this. Local deals are local deals, they're going to be pretty similar wherever you go among similar sized cities. Canadian national deals will be easier to get in Toronto, but significantly smaller than US national deals. For example, Nike probably pay 5-10x more on a US national deal than they do on a Canadian national deal. They might still want Marchand's US rights in a deal with him specifically because he already has a big enough profile, but YMMV. Mitch, for example, probably isn't worth much to Nike outside of Canada. Auston probably is.
 
Fwiw, Dallas fans seem to think that the Duchene extension means Marchment is getting moved for cap relief.

My argument is that Marner's 100 points don't really change the regular season math for the Leafs. They will still safely make the playoffs even without Marner so the loss of his production is moot. And since he produces in the playoffs about as much as Joel Armia does, he won't be missed there either.

So if they don't need his 100 points to get into the playoffs and he produces next to nothing once they get there, what exactly are the Leafs "giving up"? Lots of teams could use his type of regular season production to get them over the hump and into the playoffs, but the Leafs aren't one of those teams. The Leafs need a guy to help them get over the hump in the postseason.

It is, sort of. I went over this in a post earlier, but the short version is that his rough market value this summer was a 3 year contract that would have netted him about 11 million after taxes. This deal will net him a bit more than that over 4, but that 4th year is his 38 yr old season, so probably not worth a whole lot and they'll just Robidas him if he's cooked by then. It's an AAV discount but not really a take home pay discount.
