The Sabres seem to forget that no matter where he's traded chances are good that they never get full value for Eichel because Eichel is the best player in the trade. They also forget that with or without Eichel, their team is garbage and this trade, whatever it gets them in return, isn't going to change that in the short or medium term. Every time they play Eichel's new team, the Sabres are going to get rolled like a wino in the gutter but who cares? They suck either way. Trade him for the best deal you can get regardless of what division that other team plays in.Same thing happened w ROR - yet people were mocking MB when he said the going rate for an eastern Conf team was a 1st + Poehling + + + +, whereas STL gave none of that.
Sabres wanted ROR out of the eastern conference, and went with the lesser deal

Never thought I'd see that abortion of a franchise out-maneuver anyone, and yet here we are.
Merkley? The Devils were clearly worried Bergevin was about to trade for him.The Devils have acquired Christian Jaros from the Sharks for Nick Merkley.
