Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Yup he shits dollar bills
The only reason Winter-peg ever got a team back was because Thomson decided to flex his family muscle & grow the empire into US in acquiring Reuters (Thomson-Reuters)

Jeremy Jacobs & Philip Anschutz worship at the feet of Thomson - Baron David was going to get whichever team he wanted

I have some thoughts about Dubois, which probably requires its own thread, but about the Jets...

Is anyone surprised that a team whose "leaders" are Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler quit again?

This shit's been happening for a while now.

Said to have been a toxic room in last couple of years. Not sure if that’s real or not.

True. But that’s not the issue. No one wants to play there. Or more to the point, none of the WAGs want to live there. The 3rd Baron of Fleet doesn’t live there either.
3rd Baron is on record that he doesn’t even like sports in particular hockey - he’s an art collector

So neither the players NOR the owner actually want to be involved with hockey in Winnipeg. Nice.
Roy Thompson moved to Manitoba to try and make it as a farmer (the Thomson’s were peasant Scottish farmers), and after years of failure went back to Toronto to eventually start his radio empire…. this was a family heritage play IMO

Except Jets have 3rd Baron Thomson of Fleet, in owner David Thomson worth $60B vs numb nuts consortium peasants who owned Expos
Doesn't matter if your team is located in a shithole city that no good free agents want to play in. The salary cap prevents the Jets from outspending their competition and rich or not, no owner wants to lose money. The Jets were always going to be a financial crap shoot in an arena with a capacity of under 16K and limited luxury suites. They need full houses of people paying big money to be there. They need a Videotron Centre sized facility but they're playing in a slightly larger Place Bell.

The Jets are, for the Baron, merely an investment, like how realtors in Toronto buy condos they have no intention of living in so they can rent them out as Airb&b's or to the starving proletariat. It's fine if the investment turns a profit but if it doesn't he won't hesitate to dump it. But the problem is, just like it would be in Quebec City, what happens when you want to flip it? There isn't another Thomson in Winnipeg any more than there's another PK Peladeau in Quebec. You put the team up for sale and it's guaranteed that the team is moving south.
