Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Was talking about that the other day with a bud in Montreal. Crickets. Can freely maneuver and make calls.

I’ll echo GGPx, I’d target a signed Matthews and throw the 5OA and kitchen sink at Leafs
I would honestly just ask Toronto what they want and give it to them. (On the condition that Matthews signs an extension, otherwise I'm not in the least bit interested)

You get your #1, elite, big, franchise center in his prime? Fuck everything else, half the rebuild is done overnight.

PS: I still owe you a drink (rosé?)

There's literally zero possibility that AM would sign a deal with any Canadian team other then TML. If he bolts, it's for the U.S.

As we’ve always stated here, if Matthews wants to maximize $, Cdn team is his best option due to bonuses not being viewed as revenue by IRS, if he goes to US it’s for non $ reasons

There is the bitterness factor for Matthews if his BFF Marner’s dealt …

I take down 3-bottles on a scorching hot summer day and get branded!

bourbon / old fashioned , whiskey is more my thing

What huge UFA apart from JT has chosen Canada in the last two decades?
Huberdeau though not UFA re-upped after his entire career in sunny Fla for Cgy….. its all about the bonu$e$

And that only applies for those with US residency in a no state tax locale preferably

He's Canadian. AM is from the sunbelt, he'll head south if he doesn't stay in Toronto. Montreal is a very tough sell to live for most Americans. The language issue, among other things, is very real, especially for people who, unlike you and I, didn't grow up there.

Yet ironically the best UFAs Habs have been able to attract have been Americans / CDN w US residency: Erik Cole, Gionta, Cammalieri, Petry (gave up UFA opportunity twice). Huberdeau also makes his offseason home in Fla, and PLD in lakes region of Michigan where his better half’s from

Almost all players are mercenaries, given short careers and needing to maximize earnings - the bonus low tax option is a huge advantage CDN teams have in trying to attract / keep American players

Agree it’s highly unlikely Matthews would sign w Mtl.

Montreal's never had problems keeping players. Once the players actually come here & play, they rarely actually pack up and leave. You have the occasional player like Petry who decided they rather play elsewhere, but more often than not?

The trick is to get them here.

Although Danault and Radulov were two other recent exceptions.

Sal I've smoked almost everything there is to smoke and I really want that fucking Rose of yours with that Matthews crap.

I meant with a little more money to compensate.

Point is they would have stayed. Markov too age that's the one move I'll never let go of, hate for MB on that move. The man deserved it, give it to him. He played another 4 years in KHL so he was good for two more.
