Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

IMO Dubas knew exactly what he was doing & knows John Henry will give him the keys to the castle - he went against Shanahan’s request by holding the presser, playing the family card to look like a victim….entire scenario was orchestrated.

I suspect he’ll be named President & GM of Pens in short order

There’s lots of similarity between David Dombrowski’s rise up the MLB food chain in Dubas’ situation - highly intelligent, extremely ambitious, conniving & calculated

Except Leafs GM was Dubas dream job. There is no step up.
Dombrowski couldn’t locate Mtl on a map before we hired him but he was ok to go to baseball Siberia to learn the ropes

Yep, that's why in the end after all the drama he gave notification he wanted to stay. By leaving, he gets no chance to redeem himself and will always be regarded as a failure in the biggest hockey market.

In Toronto, he was one of the most recognizable figures in the biggest hockey market on the planet and one of the biggest cities in North America

In Pittsburgh he’ll be deemed less important than the defensive coordinator of the Steelers

Or maybe he got his dream job and realized that it was actually a nightmare from which he was unable to wake up. Careful what you wish for, Kyle.

And I doubt he's going to lose any sleep over being a failure with the Leafs. Every Leafs GM since Punch Imlach has failed there. In Toronto, failure is their brand.

So....

Perfect?

Firstly Pittsburgh has a good fanbase.

Secondly Pittsburgh has less taxable $$$

Thirdly, he could go to a real restaurant with his kids and have a pleasant meal without someone in his face all the time and not a smash and grab.

Unless he's a huge ego maniac, Pittsburgh is perfect. Short flight to YYZ.

Fourthly, the Pens know how to win, he will get a new set of advisors that maybe will help him look at things in a different light.

Those sound like reasons a good person would use to console a close friend after they received some bad news.

I would love to reach out to you the next time something bad happens to me

Until he realized he didn’t actually have full control to run hockey ops the way he did @ Soo. Shanahan seemingly was looking over his shoulder

Young & ambitious on a power trip…

The only job he’ll take next is President & GM reporting directly to owner and no one else, and John Henry will have no issue handing those powers over to his analytics golden child.

Furthermore, this now opens up avenues within Fenway Sports for a young & ambitious type - Red Sox, Liverpool….

He was trying to get that in TO. That was the dream. He’s still young enough to attain it. An eventual return is possible a decade from now

I just don’t think that’s how he pictured it…. but yeah, I’m not feeling terribly sorry for him. unless you hate hockey, every one of those 32 GM positions is a dream job

In due time I suspect it’ll be revealed Dubas tried to pull a hostile takeover, Shanny got wind of it & crushed him w negotiations not being in good faith

Dubas always struck me as one of those corporate weasel scumbags - wolf in sheep’s clothing
