Best of the internet

I still think it’s a shame this all came to light, as it probably hurts aboriginals all across North American more than it helps any of them to learn of this. I’d have buried this story personally, just because she did use that influence so positively & seemingly quite earnestly.

….I should add her age & the length of her legacy of doing so much for aboriginal culture, plays into this. If she was 25-40 or whatever, by all means expose it.

at 82 tho, and after everything she’s done, this feels a bit more self indulgent on the part of the woman who put in the effort to expose her, than it does doing what’s best for the greater good. /2 cents.

It should have come to light long ago tbh….all anyone had to do was call her hometown and ask for her birth certificate.

Fact she also wrote in all her real info on her marriage certificate is pretty damning too.…again publicly available for anyone that would have looked into it.

if all these years later you found out Mario & Luigi were actually Russian.

Bob Hoskins is a brit, and John Leguizamo colombian....

The world is a lie

This one took me by surprise. Mostly it’s just sad.

Something mentally wrong with people who go to these lengths, I think.
It wouldn't surprise me if, way back when in the early 60's when she was gaining popularity, some newspaper incorrectly reported her as indigenous, she never bothered to correct the record, and then things snowballed and she was too embarrassed and too deep into the lie to pull back from it without consequences. So instead of admitting to what, in the beginning, could have been explained away and laughed off, she doubled down. And at the time, how could she have predicted that it would ever come back to bite her? She didn't know in the 1960's that by the 2020's everyone would have all the world's information in the palms of their hands and that things like Ancestry.com would be a thing. I'm sure it never occurred to her that it would be something she'd ever need to explain because the "there were no records kept on the reserve" story could never be proven or disproven.

Seems like a pretty similar story to Joseph Boyden. Both him and Ste. Marie could've just been honest about their origins, and honestly presented their artistic output as being inspired by indigenous art & culture, rather than being authentically indigenous.

But I guess they made the calculation that it'd be tougher to make as much money that way, so fuck it. Well, reap what you sow.
Well had they gone that route they'd be getting cancelled today for "cultural appropriation". In today's climate Daniel Day Lewis couldn't have even been allowed to play a character with cerebral palsy like he did in "My Left Foot", let alone win an Oscar for his performance. Hollywood activists would demand that a person with actual cerebral palsy be given the role. The fact that they might be a shitty actor would be beside the point.

And, of course, the lead role of Christy Brown, the working class Irish protagonist, would need to be played by a Somali trans actor with CP, not a cis white male like Daniel Day Lewis.

yeah particularly given the folk scene at the time, it seems like a pretty calculated move to set herself apart while trying to break into the scene. As up until that point she had never claimed any sort of aboriginal heritage…..she also window dressed a number of different tribes she came from, until learning of the Cree in Canada, and “the big scoop” leaning into that as a rationale for why no information could be discovered about her true parentage, no birth certificate, etc.

If it wasn’t done for financial reasons, (as has seemingly been the case for the majority of other pretendians like Boyden) it was a real stroke of luck she began co-opting it as a part of her image at the exact moment it was most beneficial to her career.

…..even taking into account that she “might” have taken the place of another aboriginal artist (extremely unlikely imo, given her talents as mbow said) or how vile her actions were to her brother (although we don’t know for certain that he didn’t molest her, but it’s unfortunate the first time it’s ever brought up is after he tries to expose the reality of her up bringing, casting real doubt on the claim)…….I still think it’s a shame this all came to light, as it probably hurts aboriginals all across North American more than it helps any of them to learn of this. I’d have buried this story personally, just because she did use that influence so positively & seemingly quite earnestly.
The fact that she didn't go public about the alleged molestation until after her brother was dead and unable to defend himself is telling. But just like her denial in the face of the birth certificate, I'm sure "her truth" is that he molested her, even if he didn't in fact do that.

Easy for whitey to say, when it meant nothing to us to witness her representing their people so prominently in mainstream culture…

Imagine how you’d feel though, if all these years later you found out Mario & Luigi were actually Russian.
To be honest, whenever I saw a CBC promo for a Buffy Sainte-Marie special I thanked them for the heads-up so I could avoid it. In my entire life the only part of the Tommy Hunter Show I ever saw was the last 2 minutes where he thanked his guests and said goodnight to his audience, and the only reason I even saw that much was because Hockey Night In Canada was the show that came on right after his.
