Wait...he is practicing without a contract? Is that for real? Puckpedia has what appears to be confirmed contract info.

As we discussed before, there shouldn't be a single part of this entry level contract with Nikishin that is difficult to figure out. You model it like he was top 3 pick in the NHL draft. Now if we are going to play shell games about signed or not signed yet, then what are we really still picking at? Are the Canes trying to get his entry level contract to start NEXT season if we don't end up needing him to play a game for us THIS season? If so, I'm pretty surprised that his agency would allow him to practice with the Canes without a signed contract.

I'm confused unless we are really trying to push off a contract signing for THIS season unless we actually need him to play. I get how that would be beneficial for the Canes....but that is totally not beneficial for Nikishin and his free agency status.
 
I mean, it's Tulsky so everything has to be complicated. I'll worry about this when and if it matters, which is almost certainly going to be never.
 
from what I read he isn't signed so he can play in Chicago if need be, and the intention is that a year of the ELC probably gets burned.

This appears to be all about making sure he gets into games in North America this season if possible.

Chicago is about to be done in the playoffs, it would seem if he was going to play there he should have already been in the lineup last night playing.
 
I trust Tulsky, but this isn't like signing your average ELC - we know very well what Nikishin can do. If we have to burn the first year, so what? (Yup, it's easy for me to spend other people's money.)

I don't think he'd be eligible for the playoff roster in Chicago, having not been on the roster by the deadline, which was before the end of the regular season and before he was in North America ... unless there's some sort of exception I'm not aware of.
 
See ... this is the kind of thing Tulsky needs to learn. It's fine that you've got some sort of novel wrinkle you're trying to wedge into what would normally be a simple contract (because you just know that's what's going on here) and that it's taking time while you check with the league or whatever. But holy crap, don't just casually say stuff like that in public. Not when a lot your fans are already having some sort of weird meltdown about why Boom isn't already playing, despite the obvious circumstantial issues. That's the kind of stuff you drop in an off season podcast, man
 
I just hate to see the long term repercussions from mishandling this. The front office needs to get their stuff together. He is going to cost you a goal on the ice too. But he is going to get you more than he costs. I really think you take someone on his level and put him in and take the good with the bad.
