Call your deadline shot

Sosh and Martin are easy ... we can always trade them for a late pick or waive them. At the same time, they won't get us much.

Judging from the fact Babs doesn't even play Moore much (he averages ~ 9 min over the past 10 games), and that Babs has started using Bozak / Kadri / Matthews for 4C spot early and late in the games, I'd bet Babs has no confidence in Moore in ES or PK, and we'll get a cheap replacement for him.

We also have no depth in C, other than Marleau moving from W to C, so won't be surprised if we pay a tad more and get a Boyle-type C, who can play 3C. (and for the record I think Boyle didn't do anything for us in the playoff last year an wasn't a very good return)

Beyond that, I really can't see the Leafs making a splash at trade deadline. I think it's a combination of having the right trade partner and Lou not going to be crazy about paying inflated trade deadline price at this stage of the rebuilding plan.

I'm not convinced that Martin will be traded in-season this year.

Part of me suspects that Babcock would still prefer to have him around as a safety blanket in case a playoff series they're in gets particularly hairy.

The other thing is that $1.5M of Martin's total $2.25M salary next year will be paid out as a signing bonus on July 1st, and his total salary for year #4 of his deal is $1.75M, since the Leafs front-loaded his deal. So if the Leafs wait until July 2nd to trade him, he'll only cost the team acquiring him the equivalent of $1.25M per year for the final two years of his deal, which would make him a lot more attractive to a have-not team like the Islanders.

Both good points.

The best suggestion I've seen here is Montana's. Hjalmarsson would probably be a nice fit for the Leafs current needs, although I'm not sure Babs would bite given his fixation on L-R pairings.

i doubt they dump moore, unless they think altonen can step in. marleau wasn't effective up the middle and assuming that line keeps clicking won't come off the left wing... which means an injury down the middle could mean ben smith or freddy gauthier are in your lineup. this team can't have that.

moore is a really nice asset to have as your 13/14th forward.

Sign me up for Hjalmarsson at the deadline. McDonagh would be nice but i think that'd be too rich for our blood.

I wouldn't be so quick to move Liljegren. I think he's got a chance to be really good. AND cheap for a while. We need those.

I like Moore, but he seems very much like his dad, whom I played a ton of sports with. Just has a dour, sour look to him. But,. I like him as a hockey player.

I would imagine he isn't the first guy to pay for a round.

I seriously believe, because of one five second interface with Babcock, that there is a Lou,. Lameriello strategy in bringing down guys eventual big contracts. Babcock wanted to say a lot lot more, but he almost said "hey Leaf nation, I am not as stupid as you think I am".

Dude, exactly, this is the new blueprint. Kids these days are incredibly well trained, if you are going to pay Nylander massive bucks and Matthews this year, you gotta get Kapanens and Lilijgrens to play for tokens and butkus. Sad, but its the new way.

Its sad if your organization is inept like the Oilers. You have to hit on draft picks. No team can survive long term unless they are hitting on draft picks. Early, late it doesn't matter. You need a consistent revolving door of ELC quality players coming up.

I'm not worried in the least. Looks like we've done pretty well recently. Dermott is looking like a really good Gardiner replacement soon enough. Liljegren on the way. Grundstrom looked good. Gotta keep hitting them picks.

You understand the new blueprint, its pretty new, might take a while to filter down, but GM's understand it, and have for some time. Its why we don't see a lot of 1st rounders go any more.

As soon as Matthews signs for 11,12, 13 million, he is a marked man. Same for Nylander.

I hate the cap, but apparently its important to have 31/32 teams.

Hunter, now that we know about the blueprint.... how important is he? Marner and Dermott are making him look pretty damn fine.

Dermott with the 34th pick, now that was genius. Well scouted.

McDonaugh? #1D?

I think we've been through the advanced stats and usage and he doesn't belong in the #1D category, I think it's arguable he belongs in the #2 spot but he'd make a competent #3 on a good team.

If McDonagh is your #3, you're doing REALLY well.

Sounds like #Leafs and #Stars among teams who have inquired with #RedWings on C Luke Glendening. He would be a nice fit for TOR, played for Babcock in DET, but Wings aren't going to give him away.

obvious target is obvious.

2-year

Glendening (28): 118gms, ES 10:37 (C+), 1.03p60, 45.3cf% (-3.5), 47.6xgf% (-0.1) / PP 0:05, 6.12p60 / PK 2:24

meh.

That guy is straight up worse than leo. But he makes 1.8 for the next three seasons and we know Babs loves him. Makes sense for him to want him as a staple for the fourth line center slot. Cheaper than leo will be, younger, but unfortunately much worse at hockey.

I mean realistically he'll be replacing Moore but I'm assuming he's going to be the designated plug of the lineup. Makes too much sense to not happen.

If they replace leo and Moore with Glendening and use skill guys for the rest of the lineup I guess it's not horrible? Ideally Hyman is on the fourth line too though.

Basically I've got low standards here. Babs loves the guy and players like him. Time to accept it.

Lou already did Babs his one favor a year

Don't need anymore of his baggage brought on

Letetsu would be a decent pick up at 4C

Siegel hinted they are looking to bring in someone to push Bozak out of the 3rs spot

And the Leafs can use a depth C ... I mean, we know Bozak is gonna walk, and Moore is not coming back (he's barely playing) and we have no C in the AHL who's a lock for the NHL next season either.
