Canes Sign Kotkaniemi To Offer Sheet/Habs Don't Match

That's kinda the reality of an offer sheet though - it's always going to be way overpriced. I think this one is pretty craftily done though and was a decent target if they foresee him being a top 6 guy for them.

*Edit* Exactly what cmaleski2 said, basically.

If Danault would have stayed in Montreal I think it would have been easier for Bergevin to walk away from KK, but can you really risk losing another young center and going to camp with Suzuki and Jake Evans as your 1-2? I still see the Habs reluctantly matching the offer, his age and upside is pretty risky to lose unless you were more stocked up at the center position.

Without question this year is an over pay.

The thing is If you wanted Peterson and could get him to sign a 1 year deal at 8.2m (Not sure the draft pick level for that but for the moment assume 1st and 2nd
Would you trade a First and second for him and pay him some unreasonable salary. Yeah I would..

The Cane's obviously feel that trading a 1st and 3rd for him will make them better.
Will it? I don't know It might not work out.. (Gardiner!!!!)
But they are willing to use 6m to get the guy they want or make Montreal very uncomfortable.. Doubt they would have gone this way w/o the prior offer sheet. But the AAV wasn't bad the problem is the Canes wanted 8 years.. and that did get under their skin..

I don't see how they can. I guess they could make some trades to clear some salary.

Meh... fans will be pissed off, just like a lot of Carolina fans were pissed at the Habs.

I stand by my position that the Aho offersheet was unintentionally a huge favor for the Canes. That's a great contract for Aho and the Canes would have been insane to not match.

This offer is not like that at all. It's a terrible contract and the Habs probably shouldn't match.

Canes owe Bergevin a new suit every week

We did them a favour with a fair Aho contract

Normally you would need to go stupid on an offer sheet to even entice the team to bite

The Aho contract was no favor.. when Suzuki 's contract is up next year if some team offered the Aho deal you wouldn't like it if he signed that you'd want to get 8years...
losing 3 years is what Aho wanted. (I don't blame him) I also don't blame the Habs for offering the deal. They did it in a way they tried to make it painful for the Canes to match and if PK was still the boss it probably would have WORKED!!!
The Canes are willing to spend an extra 3 million and Trade for KK with a first and third. (No one would probably say 3 million for him is a huge overpay) 6 mill is but 6 million is what makes it painful to Montreal.. don't get me wrong the Canes are trying to F over Montreal the same way Montreal TRIED to F over the Canes (If they match) However I think they want the guy more... but they like putting the screws to Bergevin for potentially costing them 3 years of Aho..

Team had to pull the cord with Dano , doesn’t change this decision

Expect an offer sheet to Necas next season. If Bergevin is still the GM it's all but guaranteed.
The Problem with that on the Montreal end is Suzuki...
So no I think this is the end of this bout.. but I've been wrong and this is a case it's more likely then many.

Good luck signing Necas with that KK contract hung around your neck. Oh btw, Habs can take the first and third and offer sheet KK next season. Just saying.

Sorry Habsy, but the Canes are going to have no issues with fitting Necas under the cap. If KK works out, the Canes let Trocheck and possibly Nino N. leave as UFAs. Plenty of cap space.

A reminder also that Jordan Staal will be 34 and at the end of his contract after 2 more seasons. He is not going to get $6 million AAV again and he is not going to get younger. The Canes have every reason to try to secure a potential long term young solution at center. After failing to come up with a trade offer that Bergevin would accept, the Canes elected to go this route instead.

Risk? Sure. But the Canes might have 2 holes at center over the coming 2 years to fill. Is KK the right guy? I don't know, but we will find out if the Habs don't match. The Canes certainly don't want to end up where the Habs are now, desperate to find guys who can play center.

And we have our Suzuki, Drury and Cotton in the wings at center and that’s Necas’ natural position.

Your Suzuki will bust. Sorry to say but he’s not as good as Nick was at his age. He also wasn’t a first rounder though.

I really have no issue losing KK s as it will finally teach Bergevin to lock up his players instead of fucking around.

I can assure you though that this isn’t over. It wasn’t the offer sheet, it was the childish pokes to the eye. It may not happen soon but it will happen. Bank on it.

I'm not complaining about it. I hope we take the picks and move on... but this was more about revenge than doing what's best for the Canes. The Aho offersheet was about what was best for the Habs IMO.

The Canes actually want KK. This wasn't just a revenge move. What is troublesome for Habs fans is the Canes actually did an offer sheet right, in a way that might be successful.

Ryan Suzuki was the 28th pick in the 2019 Draft. First round. Is he as good as Nick? Probably not. But they don’t need him to be, as long as Aho is on the Canes, Suzuki won’t need to be a first line center. And it’s kind of presumptuous to call a guy who hasn’t played a NHL game yet a bust, isn’t it?

LeBrun says the Canes tried to trade for KK, so this sheet didn’t come from nowhere. Bergevin got caught with his pants around his knees. Childish pokes to the eye? That’s pretty funny, the Canes release parroted the Habs release when they signed Aho, almost word for word. Tweeting in French? How many Habs fans are Francophones?

I generally enjoy folks like Habsy and HabsPatrol in here but in general on social media when you read some of the utter garbage from Habs fans that is out there on this news it’s just pure comical nonsense. They want it both ways…they laughed like hell when Bergevin did it with Aho but now spout nonsense when the tables are turned. They went from pounding their chests about how great young players like KK and Suzuki are to now saying KK is worthless and a fourth line plug. Bergevin is as nutty as a chicken salad at times but he should have had his guys locked up, period, he knows better.

No different than our idiots on the Canes FB page or whatever... Call me a snob but this board has (mostly) way more reasonable takes on the hockey world than the general commenter "out there".

Kotkaniemi's 21. Plenty of room for growth still. But Habs fans have had a much closer look at the growth curve so far than we have. It could go either way... but it's been a more entertaining weekend for hockey than we thought it would be, ey?
