Canes Sign Kotkaniemi To Offer Sheet/Habs Don't Match

Why will that be a top 10 pick? Are the Hurricanes planning on tanking or something? Oh wait, you're just being a troll. Nice work from a site Admin.
Oh wait. You're someone that doesn't like to have fun. My apologies for my vicious trolling.

That’s fair. But the pick from the Canes will be in the 20s.
That's definitely what I expect. Typically I hope for the Canes to be good. I like a lot of the Cane fans on this board, so it's a better place when the Canes are good.

This year however, if we have your 1st, I'll definitely be hoping that all them major changes don't work out. 😁

I mean, always reserve the right to gloat ... but you're tipping your hand. You know that pick ain't gonna be in the top ten.

Carolina's "no good, very bad, horrible off-season" is the most overblown story on the hockey internet this summer. They've dropped a couple of games on the game score charts ... maybe ... whoopie doo.
Oh, I've made it clear that I fully expect the Canes to make the playoffs. I do however hope (if we don't match) that the changes don't work out. Strictly from a selfish standpoint of course.

Ugh... then the Canes troll job would be successful.
Yeah, that's kind of the easiest good outcome for Carolina. It's tacky, but true. If Montreal matches then all of the pain and uncertainty is in their end. If they don't match, then I think the Canes are fine in the short run (massively over-paying a guy and playing fast and loose with draft picks is hardly that big a deal otherwise the Rangers would never bother to suit up), but figuring out the next steps with Kotkaniemi is tricky, tricky business from there.

I assume the earliest an extension can be worked out is January 1, 2022 for KK if he ended up a Cane...so there has been some media speculation that you would hope an extension would be more in line with a salary number that is in the $3.5-$4 million range. What sucks for the Habs if they match is they have to qualify the player next year at that same $6.1 million number to retain his rights. Darren Dreger reported that KK was already sour about the playoff scratches and the ice time under Ducharme, so if that relationship is indeed rocky, how in the heck is KK going to go back to the Habs under these circumstances after he enjoys his $6.1 million payday courtesy of the Hurricanes and sign a manageable extension with Montreal? I just think Bergevin might look at the entire big picture of this situation and decide it's far more trouble than what it's worth on Montreal's side of things.

From a Canes standpoint, if you are going through this entire exercise as part petty score-settling and part great hockey decision, you have to get the player signed to a manageable extension to stay here for the next 3-4-5 years at least. I just would hate to see a first and a third round pick and $6.1 million dollars out the door for a one year rental.

Yeah, they got the front end set up perfectly. The offer sheet absolutely puts Montreal in a no-win situation, but to make it REALLY pay off you kind of have to get the player extended on a market rate contract. That requires him settling in VERY quickly, which is by no means a given. It also requires him playing ball on a contract that will be far cheaper than his current contract, and that's far from a given also. It's tricky, this course they've plotted for themselves.

Somebody call the waaaaaambulance for Jack Todd of the Montreal Gazette...

To be honest, I assumed Todd lived in the waaaaambulance. He's nothing more than a company shill. We may not have a horde of local NHL media types, but at least that means we get to miss out on blowhards like Jack Todd. The Montreal press doesn't get the bad rap that Toronto's brand of morons do, but they're also the same ones who gleefully spread bogus relocation rumors every time the Habs get bent out of shape with the Canes over some perceived slight or another. They can all go pound sand.
