Filip Mesar, Montreal Canadien

He's one of the better skaters in this draft, with the ability to burn up the neutral zone to create clean entries with speed. He has good skill and playmaking ability, and shows he can make tough plays with the puck with pace. Mesar lacks size at 5-foot-10 and isn't an overly physical player. His compete is good enough for me but probably not where you want for an undersized player. I think with his speed, skill and scoring ability he can carve out a career as a top-nine winger, though.

doesn't seem to have the compete level of Lekky...but more skill

Might be a smart move actually, who knows.

I mean even secretariat needed a goat companion

Boom! I called it!

If there's nobody that you really like a lot more, and you can take a guy roughly where he's ranked and he's best friends with the guy you just drafted 1st overall... you do it.

Seems like a bit of a vanilla pick to me for a first rounder. I understand there may be merit in having two kid Slovaks together as company, but you don't pick solely on that. Which I'm sure they didn't....?

When they showed his highlights after the pick, he seems like an amazing skater, so quick and smooth.
