For Borje - The Toronto Maple Leafs 2023 Stanley Cup Champions Thread

Well, health is the issue, and Tavares isn't the only one who will decline with age, and both those guys are coming off bad seasons.
ROR's numbers with us were fine this year. willing to chalk up his St.L numbers as an outlier and I believe their whole team was just kinda shit anyways. I was initially against trading for him but his play shut me up pretty quick.

anyhow, I accept you walking back your struggle to reach 40 points comment, thanks.

Why'd the habs beat us two years ago....

JT was hurt plus Daneault was able to neutralize Matthews AND Marner..... You know that was the plan.. take care of one guy Matthews. But why did Marner get washed out as well?

That's the issue here. Marner is a great PKer because he can cut off lanes, intercept, poke away etc... he can't body someone off the puck on the PK so it plays to his hockey sense and strengths. But that can be found for a hell of a lot cheaper.

He can't get into the rough spots in the playoffs because it would take a toll on his body... so he moves further and further away.

Keefe should have separated them in both series, but there is a high chance that Marner can be neutralized by proxy... and that's why I think he is the most necessary piece to move.

I want a Number 1 D man to play with Rielly, and an offensive forward that has that close to the net jam.

You want to spend $11M on two guys who will struggle to crack 40 points and probably miss 20 games or more each, and have them be anchors for a couple of years after Tavares' deal expires, that's your choice.

struggle to crack 40pts....

I would be happy with another year of Schenn at his current salary.

yeah no problem bringing back schenn after that performance. just as long as it's not at a salary that dictates he stays in the lineup no matter what.

McCabe - Liljegren
Giordano - Timmins

If we are freeing up $11 mill I'd aim higher than ROR and Tarasenko. Those are guys we could be after anyway.

JT was still a +12 player in Dom's model. ROR and Tarasenko were +4 combined. Not sure that using that cap space to sign two other, 30+ year olds on the downside makes sense.

But what if you go after Ehlers, or Connor if Winnipeg is blowing it up, or Dubois and sign him for something closer to $8. Use the difference on ROR+. Haven't given it too much thought, but there are definitely ways to replace JT and get better.

I think that is fine, but a top pair matchup D that can move the puck is still ideal if the opportunity arises.

And IMO Timmins has to play. Gio/Schenn are 6/7.

The Leafs are in a tough spot as far as the Cup goes, but still better than half the league when it comes to talent.

It would be so dumb to throw any high-end pieces away just because a series didn't go our way.

Address the problems.

Staff ----
Coaching, good enough?
If the players brought in by our pro scouts are not measuring up, maybe time to look at better pro scouts

Players ----
Still looking for good complimentary wingers (Knies/Robertson?), Bertuzzi?
Still looking for a better mix in the bottom six, keep a couple spots open for developing players

League ----
Start/keep pushing the limits of whats allowed by this franchise, pay any necessary fines
Get heavier with the criticism of the reffing, if the numbers clearly show an imbalance

You have identified the disconnect that some Leafs fans have between their perception of reality versus the actual reality. You can say and believe that the team is "good enough to go to the final" but it's only true if they actually go to that final. If they don't, then your belief was misguided and you need to re-evaluate.
in any given year there are at least 5-8 teams that are "good enough to go to the final" but due to the laws of mathematics, only 2 will get there. Doesn't mean the other teams are shit. You make it sound like it's way easier than it actually is due to your insane hatred of the Leafs.

They’re in a tough spot only based on our perception of the team based on playoff performance. Their performance over the past 7 regular seasons suggests this is a cup contender. And the entire core is under contract next year.

This isn’t a team that’s “better than half the league” - it’s a top 5 team.

Yeah Leafs are a top 5 team, otherwise there’d be very little anguish right now
