Four Nations

So it turns out the Four Nation tournament ended up injuring a bunch of our competition while our guys ended as the best players in the tourney.

cool.
I sure hope Injuries turn out to be short term. Otherwise, owners would never sign off on another mid season tournament.

Yep. The health and well-being of the players who enable the owners to make all that cash are the least of their concern. There's a new crop of players arriving every year.

Difference between the bros who talk on podcasts like they know the game and what Corrado gave us for a break down

These guys are the reason my phone was blowing up after the game chirping Matthews for leaving McDavid open when in reality it was Fox who blew his assignment from the get go

yeah I mean it's the defenceman's job to cover down low/netfront and in the still shot Fox is the only one out of position not covering anyone

if Matthews was guilty of anything it was assuming Fox was back there when he went to challenge Marner

but yeah WeHave among many others got exposed on this

The major difference, aside from the obvious level of experience is that Corrado was pointing out how systematic everything is supposed to be. "When X happens you hand off to the other defender and do Y" and how systems don't really rely on what your position is, but which of F1-2 or 3 you are in that particular coverage scheme, and what your responsibities are in whatever situations. The way that coverage was supposed to work after the initial Fox mistake was a hand off between Matthews and Fox so Matthews could close out on the puck in the corner.

Matthews made two mistakes there imo. He didn't communicate with Fox that the handoff was happening (though the defender should be the one directing traffic there, but I'm trying to be critical), and his close out could have been better. Matthews attacked the close out cautiously like he was just trying to cut down the net front pass from Marner (McDavid leaked out into space to create the passing angle) but Matthews probably should have closed out more aggressively, he's gotta know that Marner has a tendency to drift up the boards and take the puck away from the net, Matthews played him like he was concerned that Marner could go either way.

I just love how fast the play was between three of the most elite skill players alive.

As soon as Makar saw both dmen leave marner alone he rung it around the boards with the perfect weight to make sure it got around to Marner without being too hard to handle, as soon as the puck gets past the net mcD slams on the breaks and backs up to the hashmarks to give mitch a huge angle, mitch in one motion takes it off his skate in kind of a backhand position flips it across his body to a forehand changing the angle completley and whips it to McD for the one time top corner.

Obviously Fox made an initial mistake but honestly it wasn't even that bad a mistake, and then Matthews had McD on his hip and stayed in front of him down from the faceoff and through the slot, and then barely took half a stride towards Mitch before the puck was past him to McD. And even then Matthews almost intercepted the pass. Matthews barely even went towards Mitch it's just that McD had slammed on the breaks as soon as he saw the puck was past fox and mitch was wide open.

Its really just super high level hockey to me tbh.

I even wonder if there might just be a coverage tactic change at issue here - maybe on the leafs the dman always protects home plate while the forward moves out to switch and maybe on team usa its more of a man to man coverage. Just enough of a tactics change to create a split second of hesitation.
