They have nothing to trade
I honestly don't agree with this.
At the end of the day, GMing is really a sales position. You have to be able to manage your assets properly to build value, and then be good at convincing someone that your shit is more valuable than it is, and theirs is less valuable than it is.
You really think there's no one out there who would value Carlo at close to or even more than when we got him? It's the GM's job to talk him up, what a difference he's made for Rielly, his reduced cap hit, his extra term, and there will be at least one team looking for an RHD that will give you something good for him. He's an asset we could turn into something. The same is true for another handful of guys. And yes, it will be the guys we want to get rid of, and yes, if a GM is good at his job, he can make those guys appealing to others.
And really, you don't need a complete roster overhaul and turnover. You just need probably a flip of maybe five guys. And a couple of the spots you could fill internally. Let Danford play and just see what happens. Rotate Marlies in and out of the roster to fill a spot or two.
You could run through all the trades in the past 30 years and find countless laughers among them. They're usually the result of a GM pulling the wool over the eyes of his counterpart. But we 100% do not have that GM in place, as I've mentioned many times before, because the guy cannot trade. He is terrible at it, and if you can't trade well, what fucking good are you? Your scouts do the drafting. Free agency is more just deciding between the best of the lot who want to join you. Trading is where the skills actually come into play, and he sucks. And even if he manages to get lucky on a couple, then he entrusts the players to Berube, who stinks. So what's the point?
They have to kick both these guys to the curb as soon as possible or the season is lost.
