GDT #17: 2024/11/12 - One more shit before the storm

Best nerdies on the team, best scoring rates on the team (at a very sustainable on-ice s%). All on minimal ice time at a cheap salary. He gets zero complaints from me.

If only they kept/called up skilled kids like Cowan/Minten/Grebeykin in times of injurty instead of carrying 5 5th liners (Holmberg, Kampf, Dewar, Reaves, Lorentz).

i mean steeves is crushing all those kids and he's up.

anyways. still a bit early to make any real quality takes on this team yet.

i think overall they've actually been pretty good, but there's been a handful of absolutely pathetic performances that I can't quite understand tbh.

They suck. An elite team doesn’t just get smashed by bottom feeders regularly every year.

It exposes some kind of fatal flaw with these guys. If it was the good teams they couldn’t beat, then we could say okay, we need to improve this or that area. But they beat the good teams and implode against the bad ones. It’s a symptom of some kind of major defect.

And the only thing it looks to be is some sort of mental thing, where they just come out and play weak and lazy hockey. McCabe was unwatchable last night, just horrible. Rielly super lazy and lame. Nylander like he had better things to do than play hockey. A lot of times, the team looks disinterested, like, no, not gonna bother with this tonight. Insanely frustrating to watch.

Biggest (maybe only) disappointments so far really have been the Domi/Robertson/McMann/Holmberg set who were supposed to be our depth scoring. Domi even started strong before disappearing.

Last Year --> This Year

Domi 2.33ap/60, 3.08xgf/60 --------> 1.31ap/60, 1.87xgf/60
Robby 2.16ap/60, 2.75xgf/60 -------> 0.38ap/60, 1.87xgf/60
McMann 1.86ap/60, 2.56xgf/60 ---> 1.25ap/60, 1.69xgf/60
Holmberg 1.56ap/60, 2.52xgf/60 -> 0.39ap/60, 1.45xgf/60

That's elite depth offense last year turned into a wasteland this year.

It's enough to make me miss Krok.

And not minding if the likes of Holmberg are lost and other youngsters given a chance.

The mccabe thing is weird and tbh can only come from not really watching him other than seeing the pinch that turned into a goal.

Mccabe-Tanev were probably the only passable part of the team last night. Well maybe the 4th line too but that's a lot of low expectations in that case.

and if you're trying to say mccabe often has plays like that well that's not true at all given he's been on the ice for the fewest goals against of any of the top 4 dmen so far, despite playing the biggest and toughest minutes of all of them.

And in general beating good teams means you don't suck.

wonder if any of this is usage or systems. ugly numbers regardless

McCabe was absolutely terrible all over the ice last night. If it doesn’t show up in his xg junk, that’s why the eye test is superior. He was really bad. He’s super dumb in the offensive zone especially.

And truly good teams don’t faceplant against every bottom feeder they play. Their work in that area has been the worst ever this season.

Pretty sure McCabe was on the ice for every single one of the very few moderately dangerous offensive shifts we had last night.

maybe. though ottawa isn't a bottom feeder. definitely no excuse for last night's faceplant tho.

I think we're probably nearing the end of the Domi at C thing at least. As soon as Matthews is back I expect Domi is back on the wing, especially since Patches' injury leaves room to have Holmberg in the lineup at C.

And then i wouldn't be surprised if we see Minten in a couple weeks if he's producing down there.

Also screwed up half the other plays before they could even get to becoming dangerous. He was bad.

I'm talking about handling the puck like a grenade, shooting it into shinpads, dumping it in instead of making an open pass. There were a ton of bad plays from him in this one.

So you're saying he was in on most of the leafs rare semi dangerous chances last night.
