GDT #3: OCT 5, 7:00, HNIC - HABS @ LEAFS

Even if Hutchison cant be blamed persay for any of the goals as soft, at some point you need a save and the team in front of him will perhaps play differently if they have no confidence in him doing si

Got cocky in the last period of a 3gms in 4 nights stretch, and the backup couldn't bail them out.

Shouldn't have happened, but understandable.

And #AustonIsTheCaptainNow

Yeah, this. A defenseman on a penalty shot isnt his fault, but getting beat low glove by petry isnt exactly a good look either.

Same with the go ahead goal. He completely lost track of where the puck was and vacated the middle of the net while searching for it. His fault? No. The way a good goalie handles the situation? Also no.

Price was bad on Nylander's goal. Had they lost I wouldn't blame the loss on Price. I'd blame it on the Habs barely skating the first two periods.

Petry actually has skills, it's not like he was beat by Chiarot or Radko Gudas.

Petry put the puck right where a goalie has the most difficulty, just above his pad level.

He snuck it over the pad but under the glove through a hole. Fair play to the shooter, but that's a stop a good goalie makes.

Not always.

Was Hutchinson lights out or very good? Hell no. He has his blame too, for example his rebound control wasn't very good either. I just don't think it's entirely fair for some posters to pin it on him. As mentioned, plenty of fault for that one including fatigue I'm sure.

I read an article this morning about TOI and the Habs. Julien doesn't want 22-25 minute forwards, he wants everyone around 18 or less. He figures it allows his team to have legs when the opponent is tired in the third. A similar outcome in the Habs' first game against the Canes, they came back in the third to get it to OT. Unfortunately they lost that one in SO.

The Leafs did let up after the fourth goal, it was evident some were tired and felt they had it in the bag. The Habs still had legs and the Leafs let the game get away from them. Plain and simple. I give kudos to the Habs' players though for not letting up.

The thing about the Hutchinson criticism is, it's not just about this one game. He looked mediocre to poor for the entire pre-season as well, so that the fact that he wasn't exactly lights out in this game just adds more fuel to that fire in a year where we're looking to play Freddy Andersen a lot less, while also hopefully managing to secure home ice advantage in our first round playoff series.

Price has a track record where questions about confidence the team has in him would never arise

Well, I'm not advocating for the retention of Hutchinson, I think he's mediocre at best as well. I just didn't think he was the reason they lost last night. Can't expect any back up goalie to cover for defensive breakdowns. There are two reasons a goalie is a backup generally, he either doesn't have the stamina to play 55+ games or he's just really not that great in NHL terms. I think Hutchinson is the latter. Don't expect greatness.

As long as your backup is playing league average or up you will do fine.

We don't have that nor have had it for a long time

When you give your goalie a 3 goal lead and they let in some iffy stuff and never really come close to bailing out the team (onthe back end of 2 in a row), it kind of is what it is. That's backups job. Come in and be steady, especially when you get spotted a big lead. Theres some blame to go around, absolutely, but a chunk of that has to go to the guy who gave up 5 on a big but not super heavy workload. Good nhl goalies stop great chances 80% of the time or more. We didnt get that last night, after we high skilled our way to an undeserved big lead.

Yeah we know...that's kind of what we are complaining about. Hutch wasnt bad, hutch was just hutch.

It was so fucking dumb to lose McEl for fucking Sparks of all people. Probably Dubie’s worst move and I don’t care about “needing” to go with the younger guy coming off a strong season in the AHL. McEl was the perfect backup.

Eh I'm going to chalk this up to mostly NHL scheduling ftw. 3 in 4 when you're not up to full game fitness was always going to be difficult. Hutch didn't inspire confidence but the defensive gaffes in that 3rd period were crazy. Plenty of cheating for offense even at 4-1.
