GDT #30: DEC 4, 7:00 - Time for the Mucho Man to go Savage

Marner. Tkachuk from Calgary would be my target or somebody of his ilk. Would also move one of Kapanen or Johnsson for a winger with some more bang and defensive awareness. Maybe also get a defender who plays well in his own end and can move the puck. A guy like Barrie is nice and all, but you can't have 6 fast, skilled defenders who are all hopeless in their own end. Then move Ceci, bring up one of the kids and get a true backup.

On board with moving Ceci, on board with bringing up one of the kids, agree we need a decent backup. I’d have to see what we’re actually being offered for Mucho but I soured on him a lot after those negotiations.

I’m not sure I’d call that blowing anything up though. I also think a coach should be able to get much more than a 78 point pace out of this team in the regular season even if they’re flawed and I suspect by the end of the season, Keefe will have. Whether it’s enough to make it, I have no idea.

Spezza is the biggest motherfucking MORON I have ever seen. This fuckhead has hockey IQ, he thinks the game well?? Stupid fucking idiot! I’ve never seen such a dumb play in my life. I honestly can’t remember there ever being something as imbecilic as that. Ever. Stupid fuck!

I’ve said it a thousand times by now, this guy is a net negative. In a million years Gauthier wouldn’t have done anything so stupid. He fucking sucks!

Get this piece of shit Sen off my fucking team.

This sure sounded stable.

So, Justin Holl played the vast majority of his ice time against MacKinnon and Rantanen. Muzzin-Holl contained those guys for the most part.

Muzzin is underrated around these parts but Holl has a defensive game I never expected. It's only a few games but this pair may well end up being a good shutdown pair.

1 play.

He's a luxury to have in a depth role at league minimum.

He does stupid shit every game. This was just the most glaring and painful so far. We should not be losing games because of Jason fucking Spezza while on the pp. The season may be lost shortly so it may not matter, but this is not a guy to have for a run.

Holy fuck .....
Why do alot of the posters here insist that nylander, marner and Matthew's play tough hockey?

They dont seem to have that type of game in them and they cant be counted on to provide the hitting or physicality that most of us would like to see in their game.

These guys are offensively gifted and can bring the fans out of their seats with beautiful plays.
They are going through a rough stretch here, and this team has gone through alot of changes.
btw .... the leafs did play a half decent game against one of the best teams in the league last night.

Does the defence the leafs employ suck? I dont think so.

Is the problem with the leafs defensive and goaltending? Well goaltending has been an issue as far as the backup is concerned but anderson has had alot of quality starts.
The defence has struggled at times but they are talented and they are learning a new system again.

My biggest concern other than the backup situation, has been the play of the forwards.

A few times last night, kapanan looked like he was a man on a mission and then he just gives the puck away on numerous occasions.
Spezza looked slow and unable to keep up with the play alot of the game.
I noticed he was cheating a few times leaving the zone or hanging pretty high in the neutral zone.
Johnsson tries to play with some bite but more often than not he just bounces off other players. Make no mistake, johnsson is talented and I really really like him, but if you want to get something, you usually have to give something.

I thought the leafs defence played ok last night.
Muzzin is as advertised.
Ceci, holl and dermott played really well.
Barrie was ok.

The problem imo, is 2 things.

Backup goalie for the rest of the season and team toughness.
Team toughness isnt fighting, but players who will finish they're checks ..... I mean if you have to skate 100 feet after someone with the puck, then hit them when you have the chance. Maybe that is why the goat is still on this team, because he does play along the boards and will take a hit to make a play .... many times.

I noticed that colorado has alot of players that would finish the check after pursuing the opposition along the boards.

And by the way.... colorado is a really really good team.

Unfortunately, I dont believe the leafs have alot of players with trade value after the top 7 forwards and top 4 dmen. So to hope for something good in a return from a trade by anyone not named reilly, Matthew's, JT, marner or nylander, johnsson or kappy is unrealistic.

This team doesnt look motivated alot of the time.
This is all on the players.
If you can't be motivated playing a game for millions of dollars than something is wrong.

Firing babcock was not a mistake, although he did get these guys to 100+ points the last few seasons. Babcocks best before date was done and from reports since he was fired, he will be lucky to coach in this league again.

I hope the dubas sits back, and doesnt make a rash move. He needs to be patient, which I think, is one of his skills.
Dubas does need to get another backup but not for the price i or many would be seeking from him in return.
If they miss the playoffs, it isnt the end of the world for this team.
Tampa missed the playoffs and came back stronger than ever.

IF .... the leafs do make a move with one of their top 4 forwards, it should come down to marner or nylander.
This team has had alot of injuries and from the eye test, marner does make this team alot more dangerous.
Willy is having a good season, and I expect him to only improve ... trading him could be like trading a pasternak in his prime.
What to do?

I would look at using the guys on defence as my trade options.
Muzzin wont be here next season.
Barrie wont be here next season.
Ceci will likely not be here next season.
Use these guys for future talent and capitalize on the return you can receive for these players.
Bring up the kids (sandin and lilly) and let them get the experience for their future growth. Who knows, maybe these two kids can become what this team needs.

The boomer in me say that simmonds or a foligno would be great additions but the cost would make this point moot.

I would look at woods from new jersey (kid is tough and has had some success in the league) as a possible trade option. He has struggled this year and might be able to be had for a spare part.

Is it just me or does Matthew's looks like he needs to invest into a fitness program other than the one he is currently on. He looks gassed on many occasions.

I also like the idea of putting marner and Matthew's together full time.

Anderson was terrific.

There is something to be said for a little bit of TRUCULENCE lol, but the price for those type of players aka wilson, would be ridiculous.

BTW ..... Colorado is good..... really really good.

Finally ..... the leafs made the right trade getting rid of kadri. He hasnt learned a damn thing ... the way he kept shooting the puck trying to score ... selfish selfish player imo.
It would be hilarious to see the avs against the bruins in the finals and kadri gets suspended again lol.

Did I mention that colorado is a really really good team?

I dunno, I swear I could hear Harold Ballard clearing his throat tonight.
No teeds ...... those days are long gone.
There isnt a single area that this team is still bastardized by old king cole and his merry men of sodomizing intent.

If we want to be the sens of early 2000, then spezza deserves to be here. Lol.
Damn those sens were a talented group but as we all know they got pushed and run out of the playoffs most seasons.

Everything I have said would happen has happened. They got a temporary boost from the new coach and then they went back to their old habits. Matthews continues to be inconsistent and has now seemingly disappeared again at the most inopportune time, in addition to just being really dumb and careless with the puck. The team continues to get pushed over, continue to lose puck battles, continue to cough the puck up in their own zone and make boneheaded mistakes.

A coach in hockey makes much less of a difference than any other major sport. The fact that you guys thought that Babcock leaving would suddenly get these guys to change who they are as players is mind-boggling. Yet somebody like myself who brought all this all up from the beginning of the season is called a "boomer" or a "Don Cherry apologist".

Just admit you were wrong and we can all move on. I don't even care about their record, sample size, etc. This group just doesn't have it. It's the wrong mix of players. It is plain as day obvious when you watch them that this is not a team that will win anything.

Considering all the shit that's come out about Babcock, and that your specific argument was that we shouldn't even consider getting rid of him before starting to fire core pieces out of a cannon in desperation trades from a position of weakness...kind of crazy that you're already here trying to serve all of us a plate of crow and get everybody to agree with you that you were actually right.

As down as I am on this team right now, you were wrong then and you're still completely wrong now.

Trading Marner for Tkachuk "or someone of his ilk" is also an asinine suggestion. Calgary may be a gong-show right now, but Tkachuk is one of the few players on their team who's actually playing well. How disposed do you actually think Calgary would be to trading him? And how many other players of Tkachuk's "ilk" (young, big, physical, agitating forwards who also have elite talent) do you figure are out there?
