Holy fuck .....
Why do alot of the posters here insist that nylander, marner and Matthew's play tough hockey?
They dont seem to have that type of game in them and they cant be counted on to provide the hitting or physicality that most of us would like to see in their game.
These guys are offensively gifted and can bring the fans out of their seats with beautiful plays.
They are going through a rough stretch here, and this team has gone through alot of changes.
btw .... the leafs did play a half decent game against one of the best teams in the league last night.
Does the defence the leafs employ suck? I dont think so.
Is the problem with the leafs defensive and goaltending? Well goaltending has been an issue as far as the backup is concerned but anderson has had alot of quality starts.
The defence has struggled at times but they are talented and they are learning a new system again.
My biggest concern other than the backup situation, has been the play of the forwards.
A few times last night, kapanan looked like he was a man on a mission and then he just gives the puck away on numerous occasions.
Spezza looked slow and unable to keep up with the play alot of the game.
I noticed he was cheating a few times leaving the zone or hanging pretty high in the neutral zone.
Johnsson tries to play with some bite but more often than not he just bounces off other players. Make no mistake, johnsson is talented and I really really like him, but if you want to get something, you usually have to give something.
I thought the leafs defence played ok last night.
Muzzin is as advertised.
Ceci, holl and dermott played really well.
Barrie was ok.
The problem imo, is 2 things.
Backup goalie for the rest of the season and team toughness.
Team toughness isnt fighting, but players who will finish they're checks ..... I mean if you have to skate 100 feet after someone with the puck, then hit them when you have the chance. Maybe that is why the goat is still on this team, because he does play along the boards and will take a hit to make a play .... many times.
I noticed that colorado has alot of players that would finish the check after pursuing the opposition along the boards.
And by the way.... colorado is a really really good team.
Unfortunately, I dont believe the leafs have alot of players with trade value after the top 7 forwards and top 4 dmen. So to hope for something good in a return from a trade by anyone not named reilly, Matthew's, JT, marner or nylander, johnsson or kappy is unrealistic.
This team doesnt look motivated alot of the time.
This is all on the players.
If you can't be motivated playing a game for millions of dollars than something is wrong.
Firing babcock was not a mistake, although he did get these guys to 100+ points the last few seasons. Babcocks best before date was done and from reports since he was fired, he will be lucky to coach in this league again.
I hope the dubas sits back, and doesnt make a rash move. He needs to be patient, which I think, is one of his skills.
Dubas does need to get another backup but not for the price i or many would be seeking from him in return.
If they miss the playoffs, it isnt the end of the world for this team.
Tampa missed the playoffs and came back stronger than ever.
IF .... the leafs do make a move with one of their top 4 forwards, it should come down to marner or nylander.
This team has had alot of injuries and from the eye test, marner does make this team alot more dangerous.
Willy is having a good season, and I expect him to only improve ... trading him could be like trading a pasternak in his prime.
What to do?
I would look at using the guys on defence as my trade options.
Muzzin wont be here next season.
Barrie wont be here next season.
Ceci will likely not be here next season.
Use these guys for future talent and capitalize on the return you can receive for these players.
Bring up the kids (sandin and lilly) and let them get the experience for their future growth. Who knows, maybe these two kids can become what this team needs.
The boomer in me say that simmonds or a foligno would be great additions but the cost would make this point moot.
I would look at woods from new jersey (kid is tough and has had some success in the league) as a possible trade option. He has struggled this year and might be able to be had for a spare part.
Is it just me or does Matthew's looks like he needs to invest into a fitness program other than the one he is currently on. He looks gassed on many occasions.
I also like the idea of putting marner and Matthew's together full time.
Anderson was terrific.
There is something to be said for a little bit of TRUCULENCE lol, but the price for those type of players aka wilson, would be ridiculous.
BTW ..... Colorado is good..... really really good.
Finally ..... the leafs made the right trade getting rid of kadri. He hasnt learned a damn thing ... the way he kept shooting the puck trying to score ... selfish selfish player imo.
It would be hilarious to see the avs against the bruins in the finals and kadri gets suspended again lol.
Did I mention that colorado is a really really good team?
