GDT #4 - AUG 7, 8pm, SN - Not like this

I rewatched the last 5 minutes earlier. They missed three separate golden opportunities at the empty net. The Dubois miss that got stuck. The one where Matty and Willy collided in front of the net and they had a free shot that didn’t get through the crowd. And then another one from the neutral zone that Rielly deflected and recovered.

Felt like some force intervened last night to get us that win.

it's pretty amazing that he sent the 4th line out after the tavares goal.....and it was the RIGHT play.

That's what you get for putting skill and speed on your 4th line.

It's embarrassing that he's the go to for national Leaf broadcasts but I guess HNIC has to appease the haters (wait a second, why exactly do they need to do that?). It's funny when some people are inept enough to claim that every Leaf broadcast strokes the team when it's actually quite the opposite.

Playoffs, all situations ...

Average goal distance: 30.38
Rank: #20 out of 20 of all goalies with 2+ games.

Love me some Willy

That's a huge component of Willy's game that the "trade Nylander" crowd doesn't understand the importance of. Willy is a transition gawd and it's massively important. If we "get it in deep" there, we probably never get the puck back. The order of operations is always, always retain possession of the puck if possible at the top.

Yep. I have this discussion with my Willy hating buddies often. It's also that he does this with such cool and it leads them to think he's floating. Guy is unaffected by pressure. Thus, comes up with awesome shit like this.

It's the Kaberle disease. When you do everything at top speed with fluidity, it looks like you're not trying. You can be doing everything at 80% of the pace, but pumping your arms and legs like a maniac and most hockey fans fall in love with your work ethic.

Hungry Nylander has been playing since game 2.

That's the Nylander that holds onto the puck, drives to the net, shoots more. Not the Nylander that doesn't try to keep possession and looks for the quick pass off to a teammate.

Hungry Nylander is aggressive and very difficult to stop.

If these guys just always play with a sense of urgency, they probably can't be beat.

Keefe has to find a way to keep the fire burning.

If anything, I think the Leafs have been guilty of being too urgent and serious....trying to make the perfect play every time under the threat of impending doom that you guys can recite from memory.

I'm not a fan of Donald S Cherry, but I did like his use of the term "loosey- goosey". When you have as much talent as the Leafs do, it's ok to relax a little and have some fun, which they obviously did when their net was empty last night.
