GDT #51: 2024/01/29 - Wild and Crazy Guys

I actually think this version of the team is pretty skilled. When was the last time they had 3 20+ goal guys outside of the core 4? Plus another guy that is one of the best playmakers in the league.

The bigger problem is coach.
 
what’s weird is that early in the season the dump and chase was all about speed - the dmen didn’t spend a lot of time with the puck, no d to d passes, the puck moved up ice quickly, the forwards were skating to attack before the puck was even dumped Into the zone, etc.

Now, they’re gumming up the entire ice. Way more d to d passes. No more quick ups. Forwards carrying through the neutral zone and shooting it in at the blue lines, etc.
 
Is Rielly struggling due to system/coaching, going through a funk or a combo of both?

Hes been bottom pairing level lately
 
I don't know that they're a bad combo, but one bad thing about a Mo-Rielly pairing is that it kinda forces McCabe back into a defensive dman role and doesn't really let him use his skating as a weapon as much.

Our style of play has been an issue for a while now, berube has just made it worse.

We consistently finish at the bottom of the league in defensive scoring for a few reasons, simply not engaging them in the rush maybe the biggest amongst them.

Ya but then something bad could happen like a chance against us. And that would be really embarrassing.

Any monkey with a typewriter can let talented players attack. It takes a real coach to get players with as much talent as ours to not score.

We've always been a pussy, risk averse organization that fell backwards into a few elite talents and didn't know what to do with them.

My biggest issue is that they're both boring as fuck and not super elite. Having a really hard time getting through the games this year and I can't recall that ever being the case in the Matthews era.

They didn't play a pretty brand in the last couple years of Keefe either, but it was better than whatever the fuck this is.
