GDT #51: JAN 29 7:30 - Leafs @ Stars

Dubas got bent over.

Marner 103pt pace
Matthews 97pt pace
Connor 80pt pace
Point 77pt pace
Laine 75pt pace
Nylander 74pt pace
Boeser 71pt pace
Aho 69pt pace
Tkachuk 66pt pace

Who were the other ones signed for this year?

Remember what the media said - all those other guys were comparable or better than Matthew's and Marner, while Willy was a tier below them all.

The beautiful thing is Laine is RFA again after next summer and will ask for the moon. Point is UFA the year after. Everyone suddenly ignored term in relation to cap hits.

TB has some deal with Satan where they'll just trade the guys they can't sign for younger guys who'll be better than them. Unless it's Yzerman who has the pact with Satan, in which case we should watch Detroit closely over the next couple of years.

As for last night, that was a fast, scrappy, and enjoyable game. Dallas is pretty decent, but all this talk about defensive powerhouse, yeaaah, not sure I saw that. Also, for everyone talking about how awesome Bishop is, well, if he was wearing an Andersen jersey last night, you'd all be talking about at least a couple of those goals he gave up.

I have to say, I really like the emotion and crash and bang style that Radulov brings to the table. If there's a guy like that going UFA next year, I wouldn't mind picking him up, and then making a larger move to deal some of the depth for a really good young dman.

The thing I was looking forward to most in playing Dallas was to see Heiskanen again. This kid is so damn awesome. I can't believe he doesn't get more press. If there were some way to fleece Dallas, I'd be willing to give up a lot outside of the core players. I'd part with both Johnsson and Kapanen, plus plus (Barrie, Bracco), and willing to add some plus to that too.

That ridiculous missed call on the mugging of Sandin right before the guy sets up a goal was a travesty. I was actually laughing at it. He basically interferes and puts Sandin in a headlock, or moreso a facelock, and then proceeds to use the space he created to set up Radulov? What in the actual fuck was that? Also, the way they were taking runs at Sandin all game long was pathetic. I gotta say, Ceci is making a case to stay on as the bottom pair RHD through the end of the year. Maybe his best game as a Leaf last night?

Anyway, the usual, Nylander is awesome, Matty is awesome, Marner is awesome. I see you guys complaining about Tavares. Relax, he's great, and will explode for some points soon enough. I might be kinda over the whole Moore thing - not seeing much there. Kapanen and Johnsson are both playing like the proverbial beheaded chicken. I love Engvall, he excels no matter where he plays, but I don't think he's a good fit for these two at center. Kerfoot (or Ker-FOOT, as the idiot US announcers call him), is a much better match and should be centering that line (they looked much better with him), and Kerfoot hasn't looked very good at all on the wing with JT and Willy. Why are we continuing this experiment? Switch back up Engvall and Kerfoot, as their play has basically been begging you to do, Keefey.

I didn't get to post after the Nashville game, but had to mention my amusement at Matty getting that empty netter right in front of Hyman. That must have been like watching your best friend bang your girlfriend for poor Hymie.

heiskenen is a beaut for sure.

and yeah radulov is a nice all arounder. will likely always be too expensive to be worth adding though.

They absolutely are a great defensive team. That's how great defensive teams look, they give up chances too. They only gave up 23 scoring chances against (we average 31) and 12 high danger chances (we average 12.1) against the runaway best offensive team in the league.

They held our offence to a below average night, we just buried our chances at a higher rate than normal. But that is a very, very good defensive team.

Any thoughts on how you think we’ll do in the playoffs, being a more offensive team?

I really like how the boys played, they did a great job of holding and protecting the puck through contact and won a lot of puck battles in the periods I watched. We did get "lucky" a couple of times where the puck was about to go the other way with numbers and the boys somehow maintained possession.

Depends on the goaltending we get. We're a possession/offensive oriented team definitely, but we're better defensively than we're given credit for (11th in high danger chances against under Keefe, and 9th in expected goals against with an elite PK). Our biggest hurdle in the playoffs isn't style of play, it's:

1) quality of competition: We've played an elite team in the 1st round 3 years in a row, the last 2 despite being a top 7 team in the league...it's just the nature of our division and this divisional match up oriented playoff format. We will likely play an elite team in the 1st round again this season.

2) Goaltending: Freddy has been overall mediocre to a bit below average this season (though horrendously streaky to arrive at this place) and has pretty consistently been the 2nd best goalie in our 3 playoff series with a side order of hilarious, back breaking goals in elimination games. If Freddy just doesn't give up the hilarious ones, we win at least 1 of the 2 Boston series.

The Leafs are also a much better team right now than they were in any previous playoff series. Fact of the matter, even with Freddy's slump they are playing at a 115 point pace under Keefe, or whatever it is.

If we play at a 115 point pace for the rest of the year under Keefe and come up just short, I want to know exactly who the fuck had a hand in blocking Dubas from firing Babcock.

All Situations (outliers bolded):

2016-/017: #2 xgf/60, #28 xga/60
2017/2018: #1 xgf/60, #22 xga/60
2018/2019: #2 xgf/60, #22 xga/60
19/20 Babs: #16 xgf/60, #26 xga/60
19/20 Keefe: #2 xgf/60, #8 xga/60

Babs' Leafs were elite offensively, and bad to awful defensively.

Keefe's Leafs are also elite offensively, but are suddenly legit good defensively, too.

the media are more moronic than they ever have been.

Yup. It’s a different story now. I’m still scared of Boston, but I actually want to meet them and beat them. This team needs that kind of building block to gain the mettle needed to win the Cup.
