Interested to see if Kase can really fit on this 2nd line. Skillswise I think it could be a perfect fit and it would really lock in our lines nicely.

I want to feel bad for the dude, because he's clearly a NHL calibre defender, but he's been given tons of chances to move off of the 3rd pairing and has been passed by basically everyone in the system and forced our hand in trade/free agency a few times now.

When he broke in, our depth chart looked like this:

LD: Rielly, Gardiner, Rosen, Borgman, Marincin
RD: Hainsey, Zaitsev, Carrick, Polak

We've spun a bunch of stuff through our blueline between then and now...Ceci, Barrie, Holl, Muzzin, Brodie, Bogo, Lilly, Sandin.

and despite the turnover of the next 2 seasons, he was never able to establish himself as more than the 3rd pairing LHD, which is one of the most replaceable lineup slots in hockey. It is not difficult to find a Left handed defender who doesn't get caved in sweet heart matchups. He's gotten beaten out for minutes and opportunity by pretty much every functioning NHL'er we've had come through. There might be more upside in there, but I don't think we're going to see it in Toronto regardless of how long we wait. He needs a shit team that is going to over play him and hand him an opportunity above his current level of play and hope that he grows into it. The tools are there, but he's not going to get there on merit.

Another example of a guy that looked like he'd be a fine 4 potentially early on in his career but hasn't broken through. It ain't easy to play difficult minutes in the NHL.

Now.

He hasn't always played with a ton of good defenders, which is my point. He's had the opportunity to show that we didn't need to bring in some of the guys we've brought in.

Not arguing too much but he's always had Rielly and Muzz ahead of him on the left side, with his only avenue to top 4 playing on his off side - something they weren't too eager to do with a young dman, and even though they weren't good there were more established dmen like Barrie and Ceci to get first dibs.

He did get cleanly beaten out by Holl, of course, but that's because Holl is also good.

And now of course Sandin and Lilly are higher caliber talents than Dermott ever was.

I don't think Dermott will have much trouble playing top 4 minutes for another team.

The question is whether or not he can do it on a good team. Agreed though, he'll do fine for Seattle or whatever team with a rough blueline that gives him the opportunity.

I could see Dermitt having an ok year, sucking on the Krakens top pair and everyone saying Dubas is dumb after we trade him for Gio.

I think it’s clear now that we should’ve kept the pick and drafted Konecny rather than get cute and roll the dice on Bracco and Dzierkals. Wonder if Dubas or Hunter is to blame for that gaffe.
