GDT #71: 2024/3/25 - Laughton's Revenge

Of course, this board actually hated adding an actual cup winning matchup 31yr old #1C in O'Reilly, even while he gave us PPG production in an insanely tough matchup role, so i guess we just have really high standards.
now now. lots of us were big ROR fans, myself included.

and I'll concede that Foligno > Laughton.

but at the same time, minimally scented turds > extremely scented turds.

Good Deadlines
2022-23 (McCabe/ROR)*
2018-19: (Muzz)

Ok deadlines
2019-20: Campbell
2016-17: (Mcelhinney, Fehr, Boyle)

bad deadlines
2024-25 (2 firsts, Minten, Grebenken for Carlo/Laughton)
2023-24: (Boosh, Edmundson)
2021-22: ( Gio, Boosh)
2020-21: (Foligno, Galchenyuk)
2017-18: (Plekanec)

* also gave away Sandin for no reason tho

looking at that, we should just stop acquiring rentals period.

My qualms with ROR was that I didn't want to pay full price for a rental having an off year. Foligno Part II: Electric Boogaloo.

He was really good for us but in the end was the cost worth winning a single round? I'm not even trying to answer for every single move we made that I dislike when the whole thing is a team building model that I fucking hate. Don't trade your best young assets and picks for rentals. Muzzin and McCabe moves that fill necessary holes for a long time are fine, but very rarely (more or less never) does a high cost deadline rental move the needle on a cup winning team.

this season is just so weird.

we absolutely smashed a shitty team last night, and most of the team has the nerdies to support it.

Except for our best players - the Matthews line and the McCabe pair got absolutely destroyed on the nerdies, which led to the team losing the nerdies substantially in this one.

The ROR/McCabe year was terrific till the last day. I'm not anti deadline deals, but the reality is replacing a middling depth players minutes with a slightly better middling depth players just isn't gonna move the needle much.

McCabe/Muzzin/Carlo deals are the way. And Laughton, except the player has to actually be good. If it's a rental I see little reason to dump significant assets on a player unless it's a 1st liner type or addresses a clear and obvious need (ROR was perfect). Best to pay more for a guy with term in general imo.

Cup winners Deadlines:
2024 Panthers: Tarasenko, Okposi
2023 Knighs: Barbashev, Bleuger, Quick
2022 Avs: Manson, Lehkoneb, Sturm, Cogliano
2021 Lightning: Savard
2020 Lightning: Coleman, Goodrow, Bogosian
2019 Blues: Del Zotto
2018 Caps: Kempney
2017 Pens: Streit, Hainsey
2016 Pens: Schultz
2015 Hawks: Vermette

Vermette, Savard and Barbashev are the only 1st for rental deals.

The problems with ROR were

1. he was garbage that year and everyone thought he was done (but he was good for us and since)

2. he only played 24 games for us.

and tbh in retrospect the Edmundson and Boosh deals were probably actually good. It's crazy how fast Brodie fell off, and dissappointing but maybe not surprising that Gio and Lilly were useless as well.

Boosh and Eddy have both been solid in solid sized roles on very good teams this year.

Yup, and Vegas extended Barbashev. Vermette and Savard were bottom of the roster players on cup teams that almost definitely didn't need to spend a 1st to fill those roles.

Should half your blueline be Boosh, Eddy, Benoit? I would say definitely no.
