The Canes wrap up their 2 game visit to Canada.

Maybe they found something in the 3rd period on Saturday? Their hearts? Shame? Whatever it is, they briefly made a game of it, getting to within a goal but 2 empty netters closed it out. They practiced yesterday but, as usual, it was radio silence on who played with whom. We’ll have to wait until the morning skate to see what the lineup looks like. I’d expect Andersen in goal as he looks to snap a 2 game losing streak. Also of note, the Canes have points in 13 straight against Montreal at 12-0-1, the longest points streak against any team.

The Habs moved briefly into playoff contention and then fell back. They’re 2-7-1 in their last 10 but coming off a 5-2 win over Ottawa on Saturday. That brought them back to NHL .500. They’re 5 points behind the Sens for the 2nd Wild Card but have 4 teams ahead of them. Cole Caufield leads with 27 goals, Nick Suzuki has 39 assists and averages nearly a point per game. The Habs have 9 players with at least 10 goals and 2 others have 9. Sam Montembeault has carried the load in goal, starting 41 games. He’s at 2.97/.897. Rookie Jakub Dobes made his NHL debut at the end of December and won his first 5 starts. He’s 0-2-1 since, and was pulled after 21 minutes in his last start against Tampa after allowing 3 goals on 8 shots. He’s at 2.71/.908 on the season. The Habs are 15th in goals per game and 29th in goals against. They’re 18th on the PP and 7th on the PK.

FanDuel for TV.

I think they just finally woke up in the 3rd period in Toronto. Again, Rod's teams have consistently looked like crap after long breaks right from Year 1. So acting surprised when they continue to do a thing they've done for 7 years is ... well, frankly it's a choice. They don't always lose that first game, but they always start like they're unfamiliar with the game and each other.

So, Montreal. Look, they got a nice little run when Dobes gave them a boost late in 2024, but that roster just isn't built to win right now. At least they play watch-able hockey, which is more than we could say about the Canes in their doldrum years. For Carolina this is a buckle down game. Just go get to work, roll the lines, make smart decisions with the puck and take care of the details in the D zone. I said on Saturday that a split of this roadie would be good. So, go get it done.

These were the lines at the morning skate. They’re…lines. RBA said they’re not sure what they're going to do. Andersen in goal.

Hall - Aho - Blake
Svechnikov - Roslovic - Rantanen
Martinook - Staal - Jarvis
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Jost

Scene setting for a 2nd line center move, IMO. Show a little leg to the guys who may have limited movement clauses ... hey, look what kind of wingers we can set you up with.

Mike and Tripp can talk about how the Canes have improved over the last game, but we still suck.

Tulsky is going to wish he stayed in science…or whatever the hell he was doing with all those patents. This team is maddening to figure out.

See y’all later. Let me know if you find the Carolina Hurricanes somewhere. I sure don’t recognize this team.
