The Canes return to the ice to face the red hot Lightning.

The Bolts have won a franchise record tying 8 straight, the last 4 on the road. The streak moved them from the fringes of the playoff race to first in the Atlantic.

No changes for the Canes after the win against the Devils. McClement returned to practice but isn't available so it's the same 18 skaters as Tuesday. No word on goalie.

That's the kind of winning streak we were talking about would be needed to pass all the teams we needed to pass back when we were "so close".

Interestingly, six of those eight straight victories were on the road, including the three toughest outs: Penguins, Boston,...and us. Rest of the competition wasn't all that much. Still, a good team.

But, as Bill said after practice yesterday:

The key is to just play our game,” head coach Bill Peters said after Friday’s practice in Raleigh. “We’re not going to worry about what they’re on or what they’ve done. We’ll worry about playing our game, being tight defensively and getting our specialty teams dialed in so they’re successful.”

Dead legs after another layoff against maybe the hottest team in the league?

Yeah. I predict all sorts of pain.
 
Forward lines same as Thursday per the gameday hub:

Nordstrom / Staal / Lindholm
Skinner / Rask / Di Giuseppe
McGinn / Ryan / Terry
Gerbe / Nash / Malone

Although for some reason they keep listing Nash's line as the third and Ryan's as the fourth. However, by both role and even-strength minutes, it's clearly the way its listed above.

Also, "J.Staal" no longer necessary, although maybe left that way #ForNow in their lineup listings for those that haven't yet heard the news. :sarcasm

Defensive pairs same as Thursday:

Slavin / Hainsey
Hanifin / Pesce
Jordan / Murphy

Lot of field promotions in those pairings with Faulk out week-to-week and Liles in LA. And it's going to be just as exciting at times as Thursday when that third pairing gets pinned down and the opponent's first line gets rolled on them.

Lack in goal with his new Weekes-inspired black pads.

Take it to 'em, boys.

It's certainly been painful to listen to. It's been all Lightning and Eddie Lack. I'm amazed it's still only 1-0 Bolts.
 
That was a back and forth way to end the game. I suppose one could say they made the Lightning earn that extra point.
 
Jason, I don't know just what you were hearing but the Canes played a very good team game. And played the "superior" Bolts pretty damned even.. Especially considering: besides a 29 y/o 'rookie' we had two players over 25. Frankly, Eddie, while 'tending very good, shoulda had the 1st & 3rd. They weren't softies but he had a look at them all th' way. I'm pleased the Canes played as well as they did. Could it have had something to do with EStaal not being there?

And that was probably, no WAS, the best 3 on 3 OT I've seen, period!
 
Even Tripp said the Canes had to go all out in OT, since their track record in the shootout wasn't favorable.
 
An evenly matched game, lots of turnovers and close checking. The three in three was what the designers hoped it would be.

Listening to Chuck as usual...

There was a decent stretch where it seemed to be all Lightning all the time, with Lack making save after save until it was inevitable that one was going to go in... and it did. To hear Chuck call it, it was almost like none of our guys were even touching the puck, or if they did, they were turning it over. Things turned around about the time that Rask scored, and then they had the Lightning on their heels for a chunk of the 3rd.

Overtime sounded like it was pretty even with scoring chances in both directions, so I wasn't being sarcastic when I said the Lightning had to earn that extra point. (Well... maybe a little.)

I know I'm not Mr. Optimism, but it still sounded like quite the game in spite of the OTL...
