The endless road trip comes to an end.

The Canes got what they needed on Tuesday night, a win over Ottawa and a solid game in net from Kochetkov. The 11/7 configuration worked, at least for 1 night, with TDA assisting on the first PP goal and ice time spread out reasonably among the dmen. Slavin and Skjei were the only dmen that played more than 20 minutes, Pesce saw a bit of a rest, barely cracking 18 minutes, about 2 minutes fewer than average and Orlov and Chatfield saw enough time to stay fresh. With Svech on the shelf indefinitely and another bad PK team tonight, we’ll probably see the same configuration tonight. I’d expect Kochetkov to go again tonight, with Raanta tomorrow.

The Red Wings weren’t expected to contend this season, but they‘re in the mix, with 34 points in 28 games, 1 behind the Leafs for 3rd in the Atlantic and leading the Wild Card standings. They’re a high scoring team, 2nd in the league in goals per game. Alex DeBrincat leads with 13, Dylan Larkin has 11 but is on IR. Old friend Shayne Gostisbehere leads with 16 assists, with more than half his points coming on the PP. David Perron is also out, due to suspension. The Red Wings are carrying 3 goalies on their roster. Like the Canes, the Red Wings have problems stopping the puck. Their team save % is .895. Ville Husso has started 15 games, he’s at 3.68/.886. He’s backed up by 2 old friends, Alex Lyon has started 6 games and James Reimer has started 7. Both have better numbers than Husso, Lyon is at 2.13/.932, Reimer is 2.58/.911. The Wings are 21st in goals against per game. Their PP is good, 10th at 22.9% but the PK is bad, 23rd at 77.4%

ESPN+ for TV with Steve Levy and Kevin Weekes on the call.

One thing to keep in mind ... for all of Carolina's various struggles this season, they've been MUCH better at home. And with the weird schedule this year, the Canes have played 17 road games (18 including tonight) to only 11 at home. Not silver lining stuff, so much as an observation.

Another observation ... Lyon should be carrying the starter's load in Detroit as he's been far and away their best keeper, but for some reason they keep trotting out Ville Husso. Sooner or later you'd think they have to get pragmatic about the very real shot at a playoff berth, right? Lyons and Reimer might be one year plow horse veteran stop-gaps, but if they're outplaying the guy who's supposedly in his prime that badly then ... seriously. You owe it to the rest of the guys and your fans to take your best shot, especially if you've been running the worlds slowest rebuild.

but for some reason they keep trotting out Ville Husso.
They're trotting him out tonight, he was in the starter’s crease in the morning skate.

No morning skate for the Canes, we won’t know anything until later this afternoon.

While he played pretty well in Ottawa, Pesce was moving weirdly. I expect 7 D again.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Frederick L’Ecuyer #17, Morgan MacPhee #43

MacPhee will be working his 15th NHL game, he’s on a split NHL/AHL contract. Last season was his first in the AHL.
