GDT: Canes v. Bruins 10/31 7:00

I hope everyone remembers how to get to the arena.

After a long and successful State Fair roadie, the Canes finally return home and kick off a 4 game homestand with a 4 game winning streak in their pockets. Tonight is the only game outside the division. The only downside to the trip was losing Andersen yet again to a lower body injury. Details were sketchy after practice yesterday but RBA said he was told it wasn’t too serious. Lines at practice were as they finished the trip, Riley Stillman also joined in a regular jersey.

The Bruins are struggling, in a 4 way tie for 5th in the Atlantic, 1-3-1 in their last 5, 4-5-1 overall. David Pastrnak has 6 goals, Brad Marchand has 5 assists. They’re not getting anything from Coyle or Geekie, they’ve combined for 2 points. They have 5 goals total from their dmen. Training camp holdout Jeremy Swayman has been OK as he rounds into shape, he’s at 2.97/.900 in 7 starts. Joonas Korpisalo is at 3.40/.872. They’re not scoring, tied for 24th at 2.7 goals per game. The Bruins power play isn’t getting it done, they’re 26th at 14.3%. The PK tied for 15th at 80%.

Rod always hates these first game back home affairs...hopefully no letdown early after playing oh so well on the road trip. History shows the Canes usually are flat on these state fair roadie return games so how about bucking the trend and show the fans that's in the past!

The Canes are 4-1 in post-State-Fair-roadie games since RBA became head coach.
True, but by memory a lot of those were flat affairs that the Canes fought through to get an ugly W. Wouldn't shock me to see another one of those tonight, honestly. Boston's in the middle of an existential crisis and Carolina's riding high on road endorphins. That's a recipe for a messy sink.

OK, Boston ...

I posted something about this yesterday, but the Bruins are in a pickle. Swayman's contract issues cost him some early season sharpness and the Bruins lost some zip on their fastball in general with all of their roster changes over the last two cycles. There's plenty of danger in that roster still, but they're struggling to find enough balance to keep teams from loading up on Pasta's line. It shows, as that line is below water on the expected goals share and our old friend Lindy is having trouble getting on the same page as Pasternak. Normally they can overcome that with power play production but that isn't really happening either. Couple spotty offense with a defense that has gotten pretty pedestrian over time and suddenly erratic goaltending and you get Boston's start ... and they're right up there with early season disappointments like Edmonton and Nashville.

The Bs had been riding Swayman (7 out of 9 starts) in an attempt to get him jump-started before turning to Korpisalo against Philly on Tuesday night. He turned in his best outing of the season in a 2-0 loss, but I'd guess that Boston goes back to Swayman tonight. He hasn't been terrible, after all ... just obviously, noticeably rusty. With two days between games, you'd think Carolina will go back to Kochetkov tonight. Martin had a tough camp and was only just finding his game in the A when he was called up to sub for Mr Pinata. There's two days between games for them tonight and for Sunday's game so they can safely ride Kooch until they play Philly on Tuesday without overly taxing him. Like Swayman, he could also use some work to find a groove.

Carolina's a strong betting favorite tonight, but I like this matchup to produce more of a swampy, territorial, tight game.

No changes in the morning skate, Kochetkov in the starter’s crease. It will be the first time this season a goalie has made consecutive starts.

Tonight’s officials. And we have a noob

Referees:
Graedy Hamilton #41, Frederick L’Ecuyer #17

Linesmen:
James Tobias #61, Julien Fournier #56

Hamilton is working his 5th career game. L’Ecuyer is always an adventure.

What did I say about L’Ecuyer?

I was expressing my displeasure about the interference call on Chatty and the kid sitting next to me said “his son goes to school with me”. L’Ecuyer lives in Wake Forest.

He either goes out of his way to not favor his local team or he's just generally awful, on the regular

I get the high stick and the interference was more a board not that that standard will be held but the bench
