GDT: Canes v. Devils 10/15 7:00

Got home late, after a long day at the surgery center. In time to catch the 3rd pariod. Only caught the last 3 minutes of the game. Turns out I no longer have Bally Sports on Spectrum. They want $10 a month. So I cancelled Spectrum and got Bally+ for $20 a month. Savings of well over $100 a month. It took a while, but Spectrum finally lost me as a cable customer.

Great game last night and a complete 180 degrees from Friday. Our forecheck was relentless and we applied constant pressure for most of the game. I think all of the players stepped up, including KK and Orlov. Loved seeing Blake get his first NHL goal, but that phantom tripping penalty on him was ridiculous - and even worse when they showed in on replay. Not a perfect game, but a perfect way to reverse the bad vibes from Tampa.

Obviously we played significantly better in this game than in Game 1. Solid forechecking, better dzone coverage, much more like the Canes hockey that we have grown used to. That said, NJ had played the night before and looked tired.

The State Fair roadie is always interesting. We've seen the Canes go out and dominate on these trips and we've also seen the other side where the Canes look terrible and lose most of the games. What will we get this season?

Orlov was certainly an enigma last night. I saw him outright give pucks away to the Devils in the wrongest possible spots, but also saw him dish up some great passes. I dunno. At least it wasn't a repeat performance of last Friday against the Lightning.

Enigma is a perfect description. There were a lot of “WTF are you doing?” moments.

I was not encouraged by Kochetkov on the first goal. I thought he was screened by Burns but the replay from behind him showed he wasn’t, maybe just a flash. But then he settled in and was very good the rest of the night. He kind of got himself lost on the PP goal with Hischier sneaking it behind him when he lost the post.

And the PP is still hot garbage.

Gostisbehere looked pretty fantastic out there last night 5v5. That was one of the better games I've seen him play for us.

So ... when do the grownup refs show up, because we're two games in and our primary ref in both games was a complete idiot. And if you ever are tempted to actually wager on NHL hockey, I want you to remember this one. A moronic ref gives NJ a charity call late to "keep it close" or "give them a chance" or whatever and promptly manages to turn a game that has not been close in any way into a nail-biter. Ridiculous.

Look, that was much, much better from Carolina and the Devils were gonna crash eventually after their early schedule. I continue to be uncomfortable with how much work Brindy's teams always seem to need coming out of camp, but at least the zone entry stuff started to look like they had actually practiced together at some point. All four lines had their moments and it was nice to see Blake get his first and then promptly exit his body. Kochetkov wasn't great, but he was much better than he's been early in past seasons. All positive vibes, pretty much ... until that horrific penalty on Blake for being close to a guy who fell over. Then big Marty misjudges a clear and we're looking at a close game for no reason.

Oh, and you guys looking for Orlov to be predictable and whatnot may as well embrace the chaos because it ain't happening. Dude is a pirate, always has been. This is probably his last year with the Canes, so ... meh. Over his career, he's generally given more than he takes away and he seems engaged in a way he never was last season.

I agree, when a defenseman can create that much offense and just be so creative with both ends of his game he is a valuable piece for any blueline. The Ghost at times can be a bit shaky in his own zone but I thought paired with Walker he was very good all night long on both sides of the puck.

They got to their game early and never came off it. Solid work from all 4 lines tonight. If Robinson didn’t have Craig Adams’ hands, he could have had a couple.
Great point to ponder...Robinson does seem to have the old "Hands of Feet" around the net, otherwise that big frame and push towards the net he has would have him score much more than he ever does...

He plays bigger than he is, he’s listed at 6’2”. But he was dueling with Dougie last night and swallowed him whole. We know Dougie isn’t the most physical guy on the ice, but he’s a big guy. And Robinson just ate him up.
