Happy Election Day.

The Canes extended their winning streak to 6 with a 4-2 win over the Caps on Sunday. Orlov had a pair, Necas had 3 points and the empty net king added one with a few seconds left. Kochetkov gave up a rocket to Ovechkin near the end of a 2 minute 5 on 3 and an odd bounce off Jaccob Slavin’s leg. The team practiced yesterday and will not skate this morning. There were no line changes but Kochetkov didn’t practice. I think that means Spencer Martin in goal tonight.

The Flyers bad run to close out last season has carried over to this year. They‘re 4-7-1, last in the Metro. They were shut out by the Bruins on Saturday. Travis Konecny leads with 5 goals, 3 on the PP and 10 points. There are 4 others with 5 assists, including rookie Matvei Michkov, who was named Rookie of the Month for October. He also has 4 goals, 3 on the PP. The Flyers have already used 3 goalies. Samuel Ersson has started 8 of their 12 games but left Saturday’s game with an undisclosed injury. He’ll be out about a week, so we’ll see either rookie Aleksei Kolosov, who relieved on Saturday or Ivan Fedotov. Kolosov is at 3.29/.870 in 2 games with 1 start, Fedotov is at 5.35/.821 in 3 games, all on their west coast trip. The Flyers are 27th in goals per game and 28th in goals against. They’re 19th in the PP but the PK is good, 4th at 88.4%.

That goaltending hot mess in Philly hopefully gets exploited tonight by the red hot Canes. Looking forward to seeing how Philly's D handles that relentless Canes attack that comes at you in waves.

So, of Philly's 7 losses, 6 came in a row in a disastrous stretch that saw basically everything fall apart. After turning off the tap with a bonkers 7-5 win over the Wild, they've settled down a bit. Good thing too. They were threatening to get little bits of Torts' brains all over the bench area and nobody wants to clean that up. Aside from getting Michkov in a Flyers uniform, not many of Danny Briere's off season moves have gone as planned. His Russian goalies have been a mess, Drysdale has struggled to fit in and key injuries to a D group that was never going to be that good in the first place has really knocked their pins out. A team that was already offensively challenged just couldn't afford the back end to be this big a liability, and they've drifted to the bottom of the East with the rest of the teams that can't stop a beach ball. I don't think tanking was in the cards for the Flyers front office this year, but if they accidentally bomb out then they've got at least 5 and potentially 6 picks in the first two rounds ... plus whatever they could accumulate along the way ... so ... yeah. Maybe they think about it.

If Carolina brings the intensity tonight, it won't be fun for the visitors. That said, the Canes haven't played a pure trapping team since they lost to the Blues and haven't really tested their give a crap level against bottom feeders yet. And this team has struggled mightily with crap teams over the last couple of seasons. We'll see.

I'm hopeful that the new guys have the engines that will keep that from happening.

Even the most driven NHLers fall prey to taking their foot off the gas against obvious non-contenders. That's one reason I'd like to see Martin play in net tonight. The guys will want to tighten up in front of a less dependable goalie. Having a couple of former Flyers in Walker and Ghost around won't hurt. And Robinson played for Torts long enough to hate him.

RBA confirmed in his pre-game presser that Kochetkov is going in goal. They plan to use Martin soon, no word on when. Thursday is home for the Pens, then 3 western Conference games, at Colorado, Vegas and Utah. Martin made his Canes debut in Vegas last season and won, maybe he gets the start there.
