GDT: Canes v. Leafs 1/9 7:30

The Canes host the hot Leafs to kick off a back to back.

The Canes gave up a late game winner in Tampa on Tuesday after climbing back into the game. Andrei Svechnikov broke a 9 game goal drought with a backhand from the top of the circle that Vasilevskiy whiffed on. But a goal is a goal, maybe it will get him going. With a back to back, I’d expect Kochetkov tonight and Tokarski tomorrow against the Western Conference.

The Leafs have won 5 straight and are 7-3 in their last 10. They lead the Atlantic with 56 points in 42 games. William Nylander leads with 23 goals, tied for 4th in the league. John Tavares has 20. Mitch Marner has 44 assists, 2nd in the league. Those 3 and Auston Matthews each average better than a point per game. They’re getting great goaltending this year. Joseph Woll has started 19 games and he’s at 2.46/.915. Anthony Stolarz picked up where he left off in Florida last year, in 17 starts he’s at 2.15/.927, which are 2nd and 1st respectively in the league. Woll is tied for 7th in Save %. The Leafs are 12th in goals per game, 9th in goals against. With all their firepower, they’re surprisingly meh on the PP, 18th at 20.7%. They’re 7th on the PK.

Black jerseys tonight. ESPN+/Hulu exclusive for TV.

The goalie rotation seems to hinge on how the starter looked in the last game. Kooch was pretty good in Tampa, so with a normal schedule I'd also expect him to go tonight with Tokarski taking night two. But hey ... with this club you just never know. I like that Svech finally got a goal on a clean shot, and I'm also hopeful he can get rolling a bit. He's been VERY active in driving play ever since he landed on that Staal line, so maybe it's going to start paying off ... building confidence by doing basic stuff well first. Aho's matchup will be a decider tonight, more than likely. Staal will draw in against Toronto's top line but that leaves a potent challenge for Aho against Tavares and Nylander. Potentially we'll also get a dose of Necas' group up against a Canes alumni line of Domi centering Patches and Stevie Lorentz, should Toronto keep their recent units intact. That could be fun/weird.

No morning skate today, we’ll have to wait for RBAs presser at 5:15 for lineup notes and the starting goalie. But with Carrier and Ghost still out, it’s probably status quo.

Let's hope we play up to the competition tonight, but you never know what you're gonna get with this team these days.

If you’re watching on TV, John Buccigross and AJ Mleczko are on the call.

Got a funny feeling in my gut about this one. Either it’s indigestion or the canes are gonna step up. Check back in 3 hours.

This is how Toronto skated in warmups

YES! It was on the "Upcoming" menu, showing the 7:30pm starttime, but now it's not on the Upcoming OR the Live menu!:mad::mad:
ESPN+ is doing the same thing with basketball games that are starting at 7:30pm.... doesn't look like it's just an "us problem"... I found it on the website still on the text listing of "Upcoming", but clicking on it there (or the 7:30pm basketball games) give a message that the event hasn't started yet.

It's on now... the menus just refreshed.
