GDT: Canes v. Preds 3/25 7:00

Brady Skjei returns and the Canes try to start another winning streak.

Behind a Taylor Hall 3rd period hat trick, the Canes got past the Ducks. The team flew home yesterday so we’ll have to wait for the morning skate to see if Svech is back. Jaaska was sent back to Chicago so presumably whatever bug was around this time has cleared. If the goalie rotation holds, Kochetkov will get the start.

The Preds aren’t having the season they expected after spending big in free agency. Only the Blackhawks are keeping them from the Central cellar. They’re 5-4-1 in their last 10 but have only won 1 of their last 6. Their road record is abysmal, with only 8 wins and the 2nd worst points percentage. Filip Forsberg leads with 28 goals and 37 assists. Only 4 others have at least 10 goals and only 5 others have at least 20 assists. Skjei isn’t in either list, he has 9 goals and 16 assists, a long way off the 47 points he had last season. Juuse Saros has started 51 games in goal. He’s at 2.92/.897. His numbers have gotten worse each if the last 4 years. The Preds are 20th on the PP and 10th on the PK.

I think Josi has been out for the Preds, that makes that D core even more sketchy at best, hope the Canes find their legs after the West coast swing! Going to this one with the boy tonight, let's get a W!
 
Lineup at the skate. Svech could have played per RBA but they’re holding him out. Kochetkov in goal.

"I think we're at a point now where he probably could have went tonight, but he hadn't had a real good practice, and with the way that travel was, it just didn't feel like tonight would be the right night.

I would anticipate that if everything keeps going in the right direction that he'll be in the next game."
 
Broken record here, but there's absolutely no competitive reason right now to push anybody into the lineup that isn't fully ready to play. It will get to be a practical concern eventually, given Svech's role on the power play, but for tonight if he's not ready then why push it?

For tonight, I'm mostly interested to see how Kochetkov responds to that absolute monstrosity of an effort in LA.
 
For people, like me, who are somewhat sick of hearing about how Brind'Amour's systems hurt individual players, do note that Skjei is not just not producing counting stats in Nashville. He's also been absolutely terrible in every other measure. He's been lost in the transition back to a pretty basic zone coverage. Pesce also struggled with the transition in NJ. Turns out some specific guys ARE suited for Carolina's so-called unique system ... that several other teams also use in full or in part.

Also, remember that it took at least a couple of months before Skjei really started to get comfortable here. He looked like a waste of a 1st rounder for several weeks out of the gate. But once he figured it out he thrived.
 
Games like that are maddening to be at. If the Canes got any goaltending whatsoever it’s 5-1 Canes tonight. I’ve had it waiting for Koochie to pull his head out of his ass too many nights, the brain farts are endless and that first goal changes that entire game. That guy is too flaky to be trusted in the playoffs, you never know what you’re going to get.
