GDT: Canes v. Rangers 5/9 7:00

Blow it up, this bunch are more pretenders then contenders…waste of a great season.
This was what they could expect from the season. This is what the frustration was about almost all season long with winning but not really ever dominating or maintaining the high level of focus and effort required to make a serious run. This roster is flawed. Maybe they’re too good of guys. No assholes like Fox or Marchand or Trouba or Kachunky that are happy to make an overtly unsportsmanlike cheap play and then watch the retaliation get called. Or when they let them play - meaning they allow less skilled/agile players level the playing field by grabbing hitting late and all the other BS.

This team has some nice players. But too many of our elite guys are either too small or too scared to hit. Heck even Burns, Slavin, Staal are very care not to hit anybody hard enough to break an egg. We have Svetch and Jarvis that are willing to play a physical game not counting fourth liners.

So no. This is the same team we watched accept good enough effort all season. Good enough for this end to the season. They didn’t waste a great season, this is who they were all season.

You nailed it!!! No playoff assholes, I guess they tried two years ago to trade for the ultimate asshole in Tkachuk but this team is always too soft in the playoffs…they need to be a harder team to play against, that’s the cruel reality of Cup winning teams these days. This team does not have enough of the types you need in the post season. And when you don’t have a top goalie standing on his head most nights in the post season that can hurt too…it’s a tough pill to swallow but a great regular season team doesn’t mean too much when the games are this much of a grind and you don’t have enough of those types to get it done.

We lost 4 straight to FL last season. This season 3 yo NY. All could have gone either way. But they didn’t. None of them. They’ve lost how many ot games in the playoffs.

There’s a reason. It comes down to accepting good enough. When our guys are ready to hit the showers Trocheck is still busting ass balls to the wall.

They played that last season with JWill with that kind of attitude. He was not ever willing to accept good enough. Anything less than your best every season, game, period, shift was unacceptable.

I don't think it's a matter of being too soft, I think it's a matter of execution. We made sloppy passes all night and got out-hustled along the boards. Our PP is a dumpster fire. Although our PK looked a lot better tonight. our D was pretty awful. Has any defenseman had a good series?

This is such a mirror image of last year: We play poorly in the first round, but eke out a win and then the poor play continues against a much better team and we get swept in close games. Rinse and repeat.

The only good thing is that I'm gonna save a lot of money on playoff tickets this year.

I have a very different read. These are extremely closely matched teams. But the Rangers have Shesterkin.
as difficult as we have made it for shesterkin I Only think Cardboard cut out loses one game more then him so far :(

I don’t think we’re soft. We’re just not the aggressors. Our issue is we don’t impose our will on the other team and on the outcome of the game. We seem to have an effort level we’re willing to work to and if that’s not enough then ok. And it’s not pure effort so much as will and focus and sacrifice.

As Meatloaf said. “I would do anything to win the cup, but I won’t do that.”

We just don't have the skill players to force a comeback every night, and that's the only time this team plays like their wigs are on fire. This roster will get a pretty big overhaul this summer. The bench may too.

There is no doubt that next season's roster will have a lot of changes. Our 2nd pair are UFAs. Burns looks like he is cooked. We have 2 centers (Kuzy and KK) who are not anywhere near productive enough (both are buyout candidates to me, especially KK, lots of cap room and money saved if that is done this offseason). You have UFA Turbo turning 30. Our cheap somewhat productive players (Noesen and Chatfield) are both UFAs and both deserve a raise somewhere. Martinook is a UFA (and has mostly been a negative contributer in the playoffs this season). Do the Canes pay Guentzel market and keep him (and does he REALLY want to stay or is he 100% bag chasing?) Are we really willing to roll with Freddie/Kochetkov/Martin next season?

Guentzel has added another player who is at the Aho level of 'really good NHL player'. We continue to lack that ELITE talent that seems to come up big when you really need them to (see Panerin last night, of Tkachuk in last season's conference finals). If you believe all of the chatter that the Canes were trying to get Matthew Tkachuk or Elias Petterson, you can at least give the Canes some credit for realizing that our lack of an Elite level forward puts us at a disadvantage. We all love Aho, he is a great player. But he isn't elite at anything.

We have seen in both the moves we make and heard in the moves we try to make that this franchise is willing to be bold in all their efforts. Well, this offseason presents quite the opportunity to be bolder than ever given what appears to be another disappointing playoff result and a whole bunch of players entering UFA status (or RFA status). KK is a still a 33% buyout for one more offseason. Bold does NOT mean trading for Mitch Marner (let that be some other team's mistake please).

And before we continue any chatter about moving on from Brind'Amour, remember that a big reason why players want to come play here is because he is the head coach. Would I like to see maybe a new voice running the forwards? Sure.

That move has been long overdue. We all know that RBA is loyal to his guys and that may very well be the hang up on the RBA contract. RBA has to see that something isn’t right with offense, and specifically the PP, in the playoffs. If doesn’t see it, Waddell needs to help him see it.

Shesterkin isn't the reason our PK is at 70.8%, nor that we gave up a shorty. You can give him some credit I guess for our PP% being 0.0, but we know that's really a self inflicted injury. His .938 is very good, but he's not been the difference in this series, but he is taking advantage of Carolina's complete lack of everything that made them effective this year.
