GDT: Canes v. Slugs 12/2 7:00

OK, so we learned next to nothing last night. Carolina's spread out lines are always going to just terrorize traditional top-loaded setups, or at least they will so long as Necas is in kill-switch engaged mode. The Canes had a bit better puck luck and Comrie is pretty pedestrian, so ... yeah. Kochetkov DID look a bit better, but nearly every time he handles the puck he takes years off my life and his decision making in general is just bizarre. Goalies are nuts, sure ... but c'mon. And no shock that you can't even count on Raanta to make his usual start in the rotation about half the time for whatever reason. My opinion of Carolina's goalie situation remains unchanged.

So back to the attempt that Tripp and Shane made at their own version of a Manningcast, even though it was probably a one-off that will never see the light of day again...

I actually think they did it pretty well. It sounded like two guys with solid hockey knowledge and experience and decent chemistry with one another shooting the sh*t while watching a game.

But...

As I said in my previous post, this is only something that should be offered as an alternative when a traditional play-by-play broadcast is also available. That's my usual approach with the Manningcast; if Monday Night Football features a game I really care about, I watch the traditional broadcast, switching to the Manningcast a handful of times during the game. The Manningcast is only really valuable for keeping me interested in a game in which I don't have a strong rooting interest. For a game that features my favorite team, like last night's Canes game, I want play-by-play and found it frustrating that I couldn't get it.

Also, as good as Tripp and Shane's effort was, it was lacking two things that can make this approach entertaining: (1) at least one of the two participants having a strong sense of humor and (2) a line-up of guests. The Manningcast works because both Peyton and Eli are naturally funny individuals and they get a wide array of usually entertaining guests. Waddell's appearance on last night's broadcast was pretty good; they needed at least two other interesting guests on the broadcast. My guess is this was something that they threw together at the last minute...and it showed.

I only heard Tripp and Shane on the extended highlight package and in that dosage, and having already watched the game, I thought it was fun.

LOL...I watched that clip to see how it would come across. Anyone who didn't watch the broadcast and then pulled that up, they must be scratching their heads!

Listening to the highlights on The Aftermath on my way home was…interesting. The producer must have been pulling his hair out to find the part where they actually acknowledged the puck was in the net.

What I did hear though is that Erik Johnson can’t play centerfield.

I mean… my wife was making attempts at play by play during the game, it was so weird. I hope that doesn’t happen again.

I preferred Shane and Tripp to anyone paired with MM. I actually enjoyed it
Ditto. I never quite understood why a strong PxP was important for TV. Radio, yes. But TV, why? And, yes, I realize that our tv and radio has been consolidated and obviously last night’s broadcast was a problem for radio.

Watch a soccer match called by Jon Champion sometime. He’ll leave dead air for 5 or 10 seconds or more. Occasionally he’ll call out the name of the player possessing the ball. Maniscalco calls games the same way, leaving gaps in the play. The Tv/radio simulcast worked with Forslund because he came from a radio background; don’t forget he was Chuck Kaiton’s partner on radio calls when the game wasn’t televised.

Yeah, I thought about Champion as well ... and he's basically channeling older school English PxP guys back in the 80s who left even more dead air. American football commentators used to talk a heck of a lot less during the play as well. It was a thing that had a moment for a while before non-stop chatter eventually won out.

I thought Shane and Tripp were fine - if you were radio only it was probably a beast but I mean; neither of the mare a pbp guy so it was either gonna be
1) people complaining about no pbp and them just having some fun talking hockey
2) people complaining that they were 5 seconds behind the play with the call all night

at least they were entertaining at times.
