GDT: Canes v. Slugs 2/27 7:00

Slugs haven’t won in Raleigh since 2016. That’s 11 straight losses.
And boy was the Buffalonian in front of me salty about it ... Effing and Jeffing about how the Slugs always "get screwed in this building." He wasn't that thrilled when I told him that maybe their losing in Raleigh streak is mostly because the Sabres have just been awful for that entire stretch.

It really would help their cause if they would send the varsity squad down here instead of the JV once in a while.

Yeah, that team is not good. Nor are they well coached. They can kinda, sorta tuck in and get into some sort of system for a little while but it falls apart the second the pace picks up of the other team pushes back. I feel for Kevyn Adams because he's in a terrible situation but that roster isn't fooling anyone.

KK going all 4Nations Canada-USA dust up off the puck drop is not something anyone had on their bingo cards last night! I thought Jackson Blake had a good game and made some very impressive offensively gifted plays to try and create offense, sadly he was saddled with Tyson Yost...I would love to see Blake stapled alongside one of the better skilled forwards for a long duration and let him cook, some of his dekes and creativity to get to the net to create scoring is refreshing, especially for a smallish forward.

BTW...Trent for Kinetico did not try to do too much last night and seemed to clean his game up a bit.

Yeah, Blake is still very much a rookie and he needs a lower pressure assignment to allow him a little room to grow. I like seeing him playing with Hall, who is the kind of player that he can really learn from ... especially at this stage of Hall's career when he's more savvy than speedy. Blake has had some heavy rotation games on the 1st line and he doesn't look out of place in the O zone, but he really needs to keep learning how to process faster, especially when he gets the puck deeper in the D zone. Personally I think he's got a very Jarvis-esque 200 foot game in there if he's given a chance to grow into it.

I was impressed with Blake last night - except when he blew a pass during our first PP - but he doesn't let his mistakes get him down. His grit and energy were on display all night long. I think JB's suggested pairing with Hall is a great idea.

I feel one not one bit of sympathy for Kevyn Adams. He built the team and hired Ruff. Since the team last made the playoffs in 2011, they’ve finished at or above NHL .500 in consecutive seasons twice. The first time was the first 2 years of their streak, the 2nd year of which was the lockout year where Ruff got fired after starting 6-10-1 and Rolston got them to .500. The other time was 2022-23 and 2023-24 when Don Granato brought them to within 1 point of the playoffs before a big miss last season.

Adams is a big part of the problem; it is my understanding from a good friend who is tight with the Pegulas that an organizational overhaul is planned at the end of this season and that Kevyn will not survive the overhaul.

Makes sense. Now that the Bills stadium issues have kind of been resolved and the private equity sale has been completed, Pegula can spend more time on the Slugs.

Oh, there's plenty of shame and blame to go around in Sabresland ... starting with the owners. They can overhaul all they want, but they haven't been willing to invest in basic front office resources in over a decade and it shows. Adams has the smallest support staff and the smallest scouting budget in the league. How you're supposed to operate a franchise like that, I have no idea. It's really the fans that deserve sympathy but being that they're Sabres fans, they make that awfully tough to manufacture. Impossible really.

Nice to feel good and walk away from the arena with a much-needed win. Nothing makes a disgruntled fan take a step back from the precipice like a resounding win. I should know because I was inching closer to the edge myself.

Maybe we should do more Whaler nights - we certainly have played well in all of them.
Feeling more gruntled now?
