A big week, with 3 of the top teams in the league visiting Raleigh, starts with the Stars.

The morning skate has already started. Jarvis is back, having been activated off IR. Jost was sent back to Chicago. Kochetkov isn’t on the ice, we’ll see what RBA says after practice. Martin is in the starter’s crease. Also the lines are shaken up, with Staal’s and Aho’s lines intact from last game but Drury and KK paired with different wingers.

Svechnikov - Aho - Roslovic
Jarvis - Drury - Necas
Martinook - Staal - Carrier
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Blake

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker

The Stars are 3rd in the Central, with 26 points in 19 games. They’re 6-4 in their last 10 and have won their last 2 games. Matt Duchene leads with 11 goals, he’s tied with Mason Marchment with 12 assists. They’re goaltending duo of Jake Oettinger and Casey DeSmith is good, the Stars top the league in goals against per game and are 5th in shots allowed. They’re 12th in goals per game. Their PP is 24th but the PK is 5th.

Black jerseys tonight. Fox50 and FanDuel for TV.

Weirdly, KK has been pretty consistent in the offensive zone, but his decision making defensively has been all over the place ... which is probably why Brindy makes that shift. I think he's probably also concentrating on getting the D pairings back to some sort of consistent gap control as well. The bottom two pairings have been all over the place the last few games. They've made some nice offensive plays but at the expense of being in position in transition and having too much recovery time in the d-zone. Should be a back to basics kind of game for the Canes.

Dallas is a solid, solid team but their results have really been hampered by a lack of consistent production from their top forwards ... particularly Johnston, Robertson and Hintz. It's nice that they're getting a bounce from Marchment, who they don't really ask to score so much as disrupt, and that Duchene has decided to have one of his random good years, but their motor runs on Johnson and Robertson and they've been iffy all season. If those two get going, look the heck out, because everything else has been solid.

RBA said that Kochetkov is in the concussion protocol but he was in the building. So I’m taking that as a good sign that he’s not homebound and in the dark.

2 weeks for Kochetkov means that we are either going to start Spencer Martin 4 games in the next 6 days versus Dallas, NYR, Florida and @Florida OR we are going to end up with a Yanev Perets start OR Dustin Tokarski is going to get a 2 way NHL deal from the Canes sometime this week (or something else might happen :) .

Imma guess the latter of those options happens fairly soon, regardless. Now way they want to get too long with Perets as the No.2 ... or 3 for that matter.

This would seem like a good time for the Sharks to shake loose a few assets from the Canes for Mackenzie Blackwood. They called up and started Yaroslav Askarov on November 18th and he had a good start for them Nov 21st (Shootout loss, 2 goals allowed on 31 shots). Vitek Vanecek had a minor injury which is why Askarov was recalled, but Vanecek has been healthy enough since then to backup Blackwood.

I don't know what a Mackenzie Blackwood would cost the Canes, but to me that is an option if a deal could be made.

See my post in the other thread!

I would much rather have Mackenzie Blackwood than Vitek Vanicek or a Ned reunion. A trade with the Sharks would make a lot of sense for both sides (the Sharks should ask for more than just a 3rd round pick, there should be a B level prospect in there as well. We have a ton of those to add to the deal).

Can I take Door 3 Monty?

Yeah you can look at those names a number of different ways but what’s the best case scenario to try and accomplish what you need and at the same time make both the contract you’re taking on to make sense with an average to low trade cost to give up for someone who may either be waived later this season or becomes the press box extra. Blackwood has a relatively average contract, has played well enough this year to justify the role as a capable backup and the trade cost would likely be one of the extra third round picks and a B level prospect! That seems better than Ned and a cheaper contract to take on than Vanecek.

We’re better off just doing what they do in those 3 on 3 drills where they just flip the net over and you only have about 2 feet by 5 feet to score. We’d fair better

Martin is going to get eaten alive this week…third stringers pitching in as a backup maybe, asking that same guy to be a starter stop it.
