GDT: Canes v. Vegas 1/17 7:00

As we were getting dressed this morning, my wife said, “we have hockey tonight. Let’s hope we don’t suck.” So that’s where we are.

After 2 awful games, the Canes find the Pacific Division leaders in the building. The lines at practice were the same as Wednesday's game and the game before that. So not even shuffling deck chairs in the Titanic. After getting the night off, while watching his teammates take the night off, we should see Kochetkov in goal.

Vegas comes in on a bit of a downer too, losers of 3 of their last 4, including a 5-3 loss in Nashville on Tuesday. They have 61 points in 44 games, tied with Edmonton but having played 1 fewer game. They’re 4 points behind Winnipeg with 2 games in hand in the Western Conference. Pavel Dorofeyev leads with 19 goals, they have 7 players with at least 10. Jack Eichel has 43 assists. Both he and Mark Stone are averaging more than a point per game, although Stone has only played 30 games, missing most of November with a lower body injury. Adin Hill carries most of the load in goal, starting 27 games. He’s at 2.54/.904. He’s backed up by Ilya Samsonov who has nearly identical numbers, 2.70/.904 in 17 games. The Knights play in Chicago tomorrow but we should still see Hill tonight, Samsonov took the loss in Nashville. Vegas is 4th in goals per game, 6th in goals against. They’re 4th on the PP but the PK is 21st.

Red jerseys tonight. FanDuel and NHL Network for TV.

Vegas should mop the floor with the Canes the way things have been going. So 8-3 Canes win, and social media will erupt with how it looks like it's all fixed...

Lines at the skate. As NoMich indicated in another thread Freddie is back, he’s backing up tonight.

Roslovic - Aho - Jarvis
Robinson - Kotkaniemi - Necas
Svechnikov - Staal - Martinook
Jaaska - Drury - Blake

Slavin - Burns
Orlov - Chatfield
Gostisbehere - Walker

Shooting investigation at the Main district at North Hills. The lockdown was lifted but the entrance to the Main district off Six Forks is blocked. That might impact Vegas getting back to their hotel if they had a morning skate and could also impact any Canes players that live there.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Chris Rooney #5, Kelly Sutherland #11

Linesmen:
Matt MacPherson #83, Brandon Grillo #75

It’s a 3 vets and a noob. Rooney and MacPherson both worked the Finals last year, Rooney’s 7th, McPherson’s 3rd. Sutherland made It to the Conference Final, it was the first time since 2017 he didn’t work the Finals. But he’s worked 10 Finals. Grillo is in his 2nd year, he’s working a split schedule.

We were supposed to have Rooney for the Leafs game on 1/9. But his mother passed away the day before that game. She was 92 years old and Rooney was the baby of the family, the youngest of 11 boys.

Six Forks Road was reopened at 2:45.

Crazy story...the executive chef at Coquette--a resturant my wife and I have enjoyed with friends on multiple occassions--walked in, shot and killed another employee (and also--possibly inadvertently--shot another person, who should be OK) and then the gun on himself. The alleged shooter is in critical condition.

We watched the noon news and I knew it was at Coquette but didn’t know the particulars. We love that place, been there often for dinner and brunch.

PK is.
The rest of the team isn't in a coma they are just on the strongest sedatives
Has it become now that expectations should be lowered from here on out because this team is consistently starting to look like they are more of a fringe playoff team and not much threat any longer of being a serious contender. Vegas was toying with the Canes at times that period. This funk they are in is hard to watch.
