GDT: Dallas Stars @ Canadiens - Tues Mar 8 - 2016 - 7:30 pm ET

Names me the last big free agent to sign in to a Canadian team, never mind sign in Montreal?

#pipedreams

I know, but nothing wrong with dreaming. Get Stamkos and a guy to play with Subban and all of sudden this team become contender.
Imagine that

UFA-Subban
Beaulieu-Petry
Markov-Pateryn

Trade Emelin, Eller and bye bye to little Dave.

Just don't be disappointed when it doesn't happen.

I know, over 20 something years, when was last time Habs signed a half decent player on UFA market? Eric Cole? before that, Mike Cammalleri? and we don't even talk about stars.

It's not just the Habs, the last guy the Leafs won on the FA market was Clarkson. Not just us.

Chucky is Crosby since he left... fair trade off.

Chucky doesn't feel pressure anymore, it helps players performance, he is also on fire because of new contract in about a year. He probably will ask around 6 M or more.

When you pay big money they will come, as Habsy said Babcock is good example. Give Stamkos 12 M and he won't say no.

I said it before, high taxes, cold weather, fanatical fans, compared to other places with lower taxes, nicer weather, relative anonymity...

If another team matches the Habs in terms of money, not much of a contest. But sure, hope away.

I don't know how many times it has to be said, but if we had average goaltending we would be in a playoff spot. Why should it matter that our best player is a goalie, he helps us win games. Just as Kane, Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin or whoever the superstar is. Ours is our goalie and Chucky is starting to come in to his potential. Not sure who said it before but I'm glad that MB didn't use draft picks to get a goalie, not knowing Prices situation. So we miss the playoffs this year. If Price played all year would Chucky have had the chance to be where he is today, we will never know. We starting to see a positive with Chucky because of this situation and I think the team will be better for it.

It's not even that. How do we even know that Bergevin will make Stamkos an offer? He's not just risk averse he's tight with a buck too (unless it's to make it rain for some useless hump like DD)
When it comes to opening up the cheque book for superstar players he becomes a tightwad. The only reason Subban is still wearing a Habs jersey is because Molson intervened and ordered his GM to sign the deal. Otherwise Bergy would have let PK play out his option.

I get the distinct impression that Bergevin is going to have an underwhelming summer. He won't replace Therrien, he won't get an NHL ready player in the draft and inasmuch as he signs any UFA's they will be just more of the same bottom six types that cost nothing and are easy to replace. He's not going big game hunting. He'll give us the line about how getting Price back is the same thing as signing a top free agent, the same way one of his predecessors once tried to convince us that re-signing Kovalev was the same as adding a UFA.

Bergevin is not going to pay anyone on his team more than what he's paying Subban. The bar is already set higher than he's comfortable with. He won't want to raise it.

All of what you said might be true.

But I'm still not going to get myself worked up about it. Because Bergevin could offer the moon and all Stamkos would do is go to the other team bidding for his services and say, look at what the Habs are willing to pay me.

I don't believe there is much of a chance of Stamkos coming to canada, much less of him coming to Montreal. I also don't believe the Habs are winning the draft lottery so I don't see a nhl ready player in our immediate future. So why not focused on things that might happen.

Like DD being re upped at 6 million at year for 8 years.

The only way we get Stamkos is if we offer more $ than any other team, 13-14M for 7 years.

Bergevin will be blamed if he fails to lure Stamkos to Montreal.
If he offers the moon and succeed to sign him, the contract will be criticized and he will be blamed for bad cap/assets management.
