GDT Game 23: @ Calgary, Thursday, December 1, 7:00 PM EST

Roster turnover will continue next year. Then maybe after 2023-24 we start looking at complementary medium term help like Monahan.

It's all about options (and optics). Moneyhands may well re-up here but that possibility in itself helps his trade value. Kent has nothing to gain from telling the world "he doesn't fit in our plans at all, so we have to trade him"
If he's indeed "healthy" he's still young enough to help but I would like 4 years or less. Preferably 3. Problem with that is Monahan will go for his retirement contract now.

I can flat out tell you there was no plan to keep him. That everyone figured out. Now I've inquired if Kent is seriously balking at that plan now due the Money's play and health.

There are mitigating factors though that every GM faces in cases like this

1) Monahan really healthy?
2) Known commodity. You're not waiting on him to figure it out
3) mentorship. Who would you rather mentor Beck etc coming up? Moneyhands or Jake Evans? Or some mistake off UFA.
4) chemistry. He seems to already fit in

So while yes, the time he'll really be needed is in two years, will there be a player as good as him in two years?

I'll also remind people that he didn't play for two years. If his new hip holds up he's good for another 4-5 years at a reasonable ($5m ish) salary.

My 1 cent American

Yeah . . . but he’ll want a 6 or 7 year deal and some foolish GM will bend.

Leadership , etc....all hockey talk rubbish

Why bother giving him 2 years when the team is going nowhere

Half this team might be gone by next year , SM doesnt fit what this team needs
  • Provide some offensive relief from Suzuki
  • Provide a quality center for Slafkovsky to play with and grow
  • Allow Dach to remain on the wings and develop
  • Allow the organization to be patient with their young centers
  • Trade him 2 years

Those are good points. And the Habs do have the extra picks already… Florida and Calgary. 🤔

You'd think opposing teams by now would know what Suzuki is likely to do when Caufield is set up in his office on the left side just above the circle . . .
They knew that Gretzky was going to set up behind their net. They knew that Nolan Ryan's next pitch was going to be a fastball. Knowing what's coming and being able to do anything about it are two different things.

In two years, we will be hopefully trading for a Monahan type at the deadline

Smarter to sign him to a tradable contract. There no guarantee you will find a player like him at a reasonable contract or trade terms.

Get rid off all the other dead weight, there's plenty there.

Dadonov
Dvorak
Anderson
Gallagher
Drouin
Hoffman
Byron
Armia

There is a lot of work to do. You'll be giving up whatever picks you get for Monahan to rid Hoffman or Gallagher anyway.

I would rather have Monahan than any of those guys, that's 8 guys and I probably forgot someone.

If Hughes really wants Monahan he'll find a way to do it. Those 8 guys are are about 35M with slightly over 20M coming off the books next summer from UFA so it's very doable.
