Kind of funny how Vegas, Seattle shoot to such levels a short time after league entry. Seems getting an expansion franchise and forming some kind of random strategy is a quicker way than trying to rebuild existing crap (see Edmonton,Buffalo,etc.). And it's not like in the case of either expansion team the road to respectability was due to generational draft picks.Kraken have 13 players with 17+ points , Habs have 5
Great depth and balance early in the franchise , they maybe buyers at the deadline
CDN teams though have the enormous advantage of being able to offer top take home $ to US resident players via heavy bonus contracts (see Huberdeau / Matthews)It doesn't hurt that the expansion teams are in no tax states.

Owners should offer it once a decade with a $200m entry fee. Billionaire fantasy hockey.I remember reading an article before the last expansion draft going team by team and analyzing which teams would choose to fold their cards and do a reset with an expansion draft. It ended up making sense for almost 50% of them. Clean slate and drafting 30 players out of a pool of about 300, for free, is not a bad starting hand.
So?for the owner or two who'd like to gamble 200M, this system would create a moral hazard, ie...recklessly load up on stars, hope all your draft picks hit, take all the risks you can knowing you can start all over if it all goes to shit
Oh no, their 4th lines were 4th lines players alright, but they were able to assemble it from some of the best 4th liners available from all the teams in the league. The draft rules were especially generous for defensemen so both teams started with a fairly deep and experience D corp.LV and to a slightly lesser extent, Seattle, benefited from generous expansion draft rules. They were able to pick a team full of 2nd and 3rd line players. As a result, they don’t really have slop on their 4th lines, like most more established teams do. That actually makes a difference.
Fine but my point remains: they both took advantage of fairly generous expansion draft rules. Good on them. Still have to pick the right players.Oh no, their 4th lines were 4th lines players alright, but they were able to assemble it from some of the best 4th liners available from all the teams in the league. Very fair and teams are dumb how they deal with the draftI think the rules are fair, and it’s in the league interest to have expansion teams as competitive as quickly as possible.
They were smarter last time. No big gifts to the Kraken.Very fair and teams are dumb how they deal with the draft
