GDT | Game 55 | vs New Joisey | Saturday, February 8th | 1:00 PM EST

He was so amusingly wrong.

Ironically this would have been a good year to actually blow our brains. We have the second best defense in the league, we should have went and get some actual talent instead of a bunch of useless plugs.
that year and 2008 were our best chances other than 2014. We tried to get better in 2014, not the other years, much to my regret.

Whatever. They were garbage and smart fans knew it was all an illusion. We havent had an elite team since 93 and haven't had a completely dominating team since 89. Everything we've done since 93 has either been a deception or a dumpster fire. The one thing we have not been (and never were under Bergevin) is a legitimate contender. So even that year we finished in 1st we should have been sellers, not buyers at the deadline. But why ruin the delusion?
93 wasn’t in anyway an elite team, their highest pts player was 23OA - there were some
15players w 110pts+ - Damphousse finished with what 93(?)

Had Buf not pulled off a miracle by defeating Bruins in round 1, Habs would’ve been eliminated by Bos for the 4th consecutive playoffs let alone losing to Pens

86 & 93 were fortuitous Cup runs, same as 2022 except they didn’t win it

But the ‘89 team that lost to Calgary was a very good team, so it evens out. Then Serge Savard fell asleep for 3 years and then woke up in August ‘92 (Damphousse and Bellows within a week of each other) while I was in Spain and Gernany post bar exam.

In 93 they were still an upper echelon team. Yes, they got favorable matchups in the postseason but they still had credibility. 86 was a complete fluke. They'd have never beaten the Flyers (who they lost to the following year) or the Oilers had Calgary not had the upset win.

There's no such thing.

we were 7th and didn't even have home ice in the first round, using today's logic, we should have been sellers as no D with Brisebois, Odelein, Daigneault starting should have been anyway near a Cup

It was a fluke that the Habs had home ice in the first 3 rounds. It was a fluke that they played Hartford in the second round instead of the Nordiques. It was a fluke that they played the Rangers instead of the Flyers in the third round. It was a fluke that they played Calgary instead of Edmonton in the final.

Also, in the regular season, Patrick Roy was...

GP 47 W 23 L 18 T 3 GAA 3.36 SV% .875

In the playoffs he was...

GP 20 W 15 L 5 GAA 1.93 SV% .923

With the benefit of hindsight we can say that this type of elevation wasn't a fluke for Roy because he did repeat it in other playoff runs. But in 1986 it was a total and unexpected fluke of all flukes, even to Patrick himself, probably.

Where was the “elevation” va Bos in 90, 91, 92, 94…even 89 vs Vernon?

There is no such thing as a Stanley Cup fluke. It’s not a thing. I also don’t believe in 7 games series fluke.

Okay so if the 86 Habs had played the Oilers in the final instead of the Flames, we still win in 5 games?

Then there's the one about Goldilocks and the three bears.

But they didn't. Because the Oilers lost, to the team that we beat. Oilers never lead in that series, it wasn't a fluke.

Flames were a good team, and people forgot that they traded for Joe Mullen that year near the deadline, and he ended up being their leading scorer in the playoffs. They were the second best team in the Western conference.

Montreal also had a boost for rookies that supplemented the veteran core. We were also a good team, better than out regular season record.

Flyers were still reeling from the loss of Pelle Lindberg and got goalied in the first round by Vanbiesbrouck, while Bob Froese shat the bed.
Caps lost 3 in a row to the Rangers to lose the series, no fluke there.
Nordiques were bounced 3-zip, outscored 16-7 in the process by Hartford. I don't see a fluke there either.
