Agreed. Granted, this team was never expected to even be in contention for the playoffs to begin with this year. It has been a very successful season for the rebuild and the future it bright.

Unpopular opinion but as he continues to develop I don't see a top pairing guy in the cards.
He can fill a spot if injuries happen of shuffle is needed but not over an 82 game season
He may prove me wrong and figure it out he just doesn't have the all the tools needed

Exactly. 1 point out of the wildcard with 18 games left.

Great skater but not sure you can be a big producer as a dman without a shot, and defensively he takes more beatings than he gives. He's good but not a lock down guy and probably never will be.
The leafs d needs a lot of work.

How is Rielly -21, when the next closest is his partner Zaitsev at -14, and then Gardiner at +22?

It's just crazy to see that kind of disparity between top guys on the same team.
It is but wouldnt a difference of 43 be somewhat telling?

No doubt an unpopular opinion in Leafland, but the correct one. Rielly is the most overhyped young Leaf defenceman since Luke Schenn. He's great at skating the puck up ice, but that's about it. There's simply no justification for continuing to hope in him as a potential do-it-all, #1 defenceman when he doesn't have the talent to be a top tier offensive defenceman, and has no defensive aptitude whatsoever.

He needs to be played like Gardiner is and he'll almost certainly produce like Gardiner or better.
Zaitsev can handle the tough match ups. We need another guy though. That's no secret.
The surprise might be that the new guy would play on the top pair with Zaitsev, not Rielly.
