GDT - Leafs @ Ducks | 10:00PM EST

Great skater but not sure you can be a big producer as a dman without a shot, and defensively he takes more beatings than he gives. He's good but not a lock down guy and probably never will be.

The leafs d needs a lot of work.

yep. like I've been saying for a while now, we have 3 decent D.

the fact that Rielly looks to be settling into something less than a #1 D is made even more obvious by the fact that we don't have that depth. earlier in the season I thought that adding a couple of veteran guys to help take the load off would help, but we might need a more radical overhaul than that. I'm not advocating trading Rielly at all, he's still a very good player. perhaps he's miscast in the role he's currently in though. wouldn't mind perhaps moving Gardiner in order to bring in a top 4 guy that more fits what we lack.

yeah i'm leaning more and more to using jake to trade for that elusive top pair RH dman.

dermott/nielsen have a good chance of filling the 2nd pair LHD going forward.

One thing I really like in a blueliner is smarts. It's really important. Jake, not so smart.

and all the numbers say Rielly is doing extremely well for his usage. and the fact that babcock has rielly getting bigger minutes after putting jake and Zaitsev together tells me he sees the same thing.

plus minus is a ridiculous stat. unfortunately no matter how much people admit it they still have trouble ignoring it.

justin schultz is +27 while letang is +2. it doesn't mean anything - in fact it means the opposite of what people think.

Blueliners take a long time to round out their game. Rielly is still on the developmental curve. I give blueliners until 24-25 to get a sense of their peak.

It'd be a real bad move to trade Jake.

We'd miss him badly if we traded him.

And we need more, not less back there.

If we trade a D for a D, I don't think we'll get much for Gardiner. I'm all for it, but I just don't think it works out.

Gardiner is not a 'bad dman'. It's just as #3 (or at times, #2) he struggles. He needs to be sheltered, and ideally he'd make a very good #4.

So how many people here are going to be upset if he's dealt this summer?

with jake's raw talent, scoring totals, +/-, and good advanced stats i'm sure he'd get value.

Yeah if you can get a righty that plays a more reliable game like Manson I'd do it. Though thats probably not what the Ducks are looking for. Apparently Winnipeg wanted a lefty for Trouba.

Gardiner does a lot of great things. But we need that reliable big minute righty and ya, Dermott/Neilsen will replace him in the long run

If you're going to trade anyone it better be Rielly. That guy has some serious inflated value going on. Jake is just fine on the second pair. Passes both the new school and old school stat tests.

There's a reason you'd get a helluva lot more for Rielly and it's not because his value is inflated.

+1

We're going to get to put this in with "funny release", "exceptionally average", and whatever the **** it was he said about Alex Steen back in the day.

The kid faces pretty damn close to the toughest usage in the league, with a bunch of rookies and/or defensive chumps like Bozak and JVR. Has he migrated into stud territory yet? No. But he's facing stud usage and doing an okay job of it.

Bad road trip by the team, California trip at that, now we want to trade everyone away?

They'll be fine in the coming games.
