Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

It’s good to see the numbers back up the eye test (at least to my eyes) that Gallagher is still very useful (can’t do anything about his contract now)

From the Athletic

>>Back in the day, Brendan Gallagher was one of the original analytics darlings. A million years later, that hasn’t changed. This season, Gallagher’s impact on expected goal differential is plus-0.74 per 60, a career high and a top-five mark in hockey.

That doesn’t mean he’s a secret star or anything as he’s lost the scoring touch that once made him special. But it does mean he’s doing a fantastic job in Montreal’s bottom six. By Net Rating, Gallagher’s plus-1.5 is actually one of the best marks on the team this year. Montreal’s OG still rocks.

Agree. And people underestimate how much shots have improved in the past few years. Beating a goalie clean with a wrist shot from the faceoffs circles is now a common occurrence in the league, shots are precise and hard. It either hits the goalie or he has to guess correctly, but shooters are good at deception too. The days of having the luxury to react to a shot from those distance are gone.

Is he an elite goaltender? No. Is he a starter in this league? Yes. Is he our goalie of the future? No. But we don't have to spend assets or try to make a big splash for a goalie either, plus his salary is more than reasonable.
I take him over many starters in the league. ie: Skinner. Monty won gold and was a good reason that team won gold at the WC.

yet in the two games I saw, he was pretty useless, still tries hard, works hard, but he just can't do anything anymore

Agreed.

Habs fans have been spoiled with elite goaltending so expectations are too high.
Elite goalie expectations?

No..

Monty is average. He always has been and always will be. Nobody thinks otherwise. The give the guy a break thing won't change it either.

Also nobody complained about Monty against Vancouver.
