Habs trade Monahan to Jets

I think Gallagher can be moved but at 50% retention and a pick or prospect. We have a couple of D that can go.
Three more years after this one. Probably don't trade with retention or buyout until the team is good enough to need that money.

Doubt Habs get involved in the FA lunacy of overpaying
Yeah, I agree in spirit. I don't think they'll get into any bidding wars for the big names. But I can see them vying for a couple pieces along the line of some past signings like Chariot, Toffoli and even going way back, Hamrlik. We're going to need some serviceable vets to help bring along the kids, IMO.

There's no point in the Habs getting into bidding wars. For most UFA's, the only thing the Habs are good for is to use as leverage in order to get a better offer from another team. The top tier UFA's don't want to actually play in Montreal.

well there is a point, gets fan engagement, clicks for rumour sites etc.
Which inevitably backfires when they wind up signing no one of consequence or grossly overpay for a declining player. Then they get the kind of fan engagement they would prefer not to have. A better plan is to prepare the fans for a quiet July 1st. That way, anyone they do happen to sign is a pleasant surprise rather than a let-down.

Chicago has a lot of picks too, might not be as valuable for them.
Send them Harris and copacetic. Or Barron and Harris. Or that Swede. Or turn Heineken into the new Glenn Metropolit and make him the aluminum can of the NHL. Himandthem. Emily. That one.
