Habs trade Monahan to Jets

I really don't know what some of you expected as a return for him.

That's roughly what I thought we'd get. A first round pick or a B prospect + a 2nd. I was hoping that maybe we'd get a 4th thrown in, but that wasn't possible.

By the way, you can count on two hands the amount of times top prospects were traded in the last fifteen years. The NHL, at its core, is an incredibly conservative league and GMs don't want to trade their top prospects.

If you remember a few years ago when we traded Toffoli to Calgary for a first, a fifth & Heineman? And some here were happy that we got a former second round pick from two prior drafts who was initially traded from Florida to Calgary for Sam Bennett? Well, the cat's out of the bag. There's a reason why neither Calgary or Florida held on to him: He's a dime a dozen prospect with a low ceiling.

Legit top prospects are hard to come by in the NHL. Late first round picks are not.

Exactly , this is a fine haul for Hugo

Took an injury prone player and his cap for a potential lottery pick and flipped for another lower first

WTF more do you want in return

Hughes said at the presser that whenever he asked teams for a certain prospect for Monahan, the answer was NO

We won’t make that pick. It will be packaged up for someone who can play immediately.
My thinking as well. At least we'll try. If I understand their timeline and hopes, the slow edging out of the rebuild will start by the 2025 TDL and we're going to start going "all in" as far as playing in the FA market after the 2025 draft. If we think about it, considering all the horrible injuries (nearly all of our 2nd and 3rd lines have been on IR), and a young and/or terrible D, we still skated head-to-head with some of the best teams. So once guys like Dach, Newhook and Dvorak are back...we should be nipping at the heels of a playoff spot. JMHO!

We could also resort to spending assets to get rid of bad contracts. Chicago ain’t winning anything anytime soon but has tons of draft picks. What would it take for them to consider taking on Gallagher or Anderson? Likely impossible, but doesn’t hurt to ask.

I think Gallagher can be moved but at 50% retention and a pick or prospect. We have a couple of D that can go.

Doubt Habs get involved in the FA lunacy of overpaying
