The model is broken — they charge 1.99/ month and have a ton of writers to pay
 
only for new subscribers

I’ve been a “new subscriber”’for 5 years. I always cancel at the end of the year …and then less than two weeks later they hit me with a .99/Mo or 1.99 offer. Last time they even threw in free six months access to the New York Times.
 
I used credit card points to basically get a free year of the NYT, and they threw in the Athletic and other stuff. I’ve scheduled cancellation day on my phone…
 
I’m starting to question how the NYT makes money…. My free 6 months expired last week and two days later they invited me back for $20 for the year…TOTAL…. that’s even less than my Athletic sub (24/yr) which I will cancel at the end of the month since it’s included in the NYT price
 
With eyeball traffic and clicks, I suppose. Not so much subscriptions. They were pretty clear that content creators linked to specific teams didn’t drive enough traffic to justify the cost. Profit maximization.
