Hurricanes 2024-25 Post Mortem and Off Season Stuff

Svech and a 1st for Tage Thompson? Yeah,,,?

After the way DeBoer treated Otter last night, send the firsts that we got for Rantanen back to them for Otter. (Originally suggested by Polarbare on Bluesky)
I'd hate to lose Svech but for Tage T... ummm!

On Goalies, I was thinkin' Kooch for Gibson. but if Otter is any possibility - a 1st + and even throw in Martin, MAYBE Kooch..

So many names have been filling my head: Trouba would have been a BIG plus vs Cats!

Looking back I would like to have seen KK for Horvat for 2C. Going forward: He well may be available again. Zegras was doing well until the Ducks didn't. Still: Boeser and Petterson (3 @ Van. 1 C & 2 D), hmmm, In NYR Krieder and K'Andre 'available'; Ehlers, Nelson..., Sam Bennett..., Morgan Geekie...!

I agree w/ JB on Burns and Rod's blinders and on Stall - but who can replace or even succeed him? Gonna be an interesting summer and exciting!

Somebody (AH!) mentioned Ehlers, and I think he's going to be a fallback option for somebody who misses out on Marner. Cheaper, lower maintenance, far more likely to end up on a reasonable non-max term deal. Both are options that I don' think would be popular on this board, but both are very much the kind of creative power play guys that this team desperately needs.

You could always swap out one small guy for another, like Ehlers for Blake, but just to add one is not the way to go.

Who's going to be the first to suggest bringing back Turbo?
That ship has sailed but I already see far too many idiots online saying Karlsson to the Canes is a great idea for the defense which would be like committing the worst sin to this team, that guy is just awful defensively, the contract is gross and frankly if you didn’t like Burns decline you’re really going to hate how bad that guy is in a freefall.

I don’t think they need much on defense. Bring in a depth piece and take a shot at ekblad or someone similar. They have bigger needs. Spend money or trade assets on a center and some big mean talented sum bitches. Easier said than done but the defense is in decent shape

Honestly, the defense is fine. If they can get in there on one, then maybe you bring in a free agent who could play on the first pairing. That would make Morrow your 7th D and that's basically ideal.

Center is where I keep landing when I think about next year.

Only seen this from non-Canes which would make sense. Hard no on EK

Squandering trade assets and extensive cap space on 35 year old Erik Karlsson is not likely to happen.

I suspect that some people are looking at this as Brent Burns 2.0, where we trade for the aging RHD PP1 guy. If Pittsburgh retained 50% more of Karlsson's already retained contract, his cap hit would be $5 million (under Burns $5.28). And if Pittsburgh pays the 25-26 signing bonus before trading Karlsson and retains 50%, Karlsson's salary for next season be under $2 million for the acquiring team.

So as far as contract, salary, position and shot, if Pittsburgh is willing to retain on Karlsson, all of that stuff COULD look very similar to Brent Burns. The problem of course, especially from the Canes perspective, is that Brent Burns, even at his advanced age, could still play some level of actual defense. He isn't a defensive stopper out there, and at 40 his defensive skills have eroded further, but even at 40, Burns can actually defend better than Erik Karlsson ever could. If you are part of the group hoping that someday Jaccob Slavin doesn't have to spend so much time covering for his partner, Karlsson is the worst case scenario.

I don't see the Canes envisioning Erik Karlsson as a good fit. We already have Gostisbehere playing that same role for less money.

Erik Karlsson 24-25 'counting' stats

Even Strength 9 Goals 31 Assists
PP 2 Goals 13 Assists

Shayne Gostisbehere 24-25 'counting' stats

Even Strength 3 Goals 15 Assists
PP 4 Goals 23 Assists

I expect any major addition to the Canes blueline will include players who are capable of actually defending (and I'm thinking are bigger guys willing to run into people).

What are the better Center options out there? Larkin? I'm not sure his defensive acumen meets Rod's standards. But, he does seem pretty frustrated with the situation in Detroit. Horvat? With a new GM, they might want to change up their mix a bit. But, it will be more like having 2 2nd line centers. Petersson is potentially available, but that's a lot of $ for a lot of years for someone who's fallen off big time. Any other potential intriguing targets?

On the defensive side - do you think we'll take a 2nd run at Manson from the Avalanche? They need to clear some cap space...but he seems pretty injury prone.

Yeah, I don't see Karlsson being on Carolina's radar this summer. As CM mentions, the amount of actual defense he plays is rivaled by Tony DeAngelo and that ain't a compliment. Plus, 90% of the mentions of that interest are either from people who are actually joking or people who shouldn't be taken seriously. I mean, anything can happen. The Canes did sign DeAngelo not once but twice after all. But ... nah.

As for Quickie ... bon chance, friend. The grinder's grinder.

Since you'd have to figure that Carolina would be mining the trade market if they pursue a Top 6 center, it's REALLY hard to boil it down to specific names. Looking at big market or big budget teams in transition, you can do a bit of math and land on Horvat and Pettersson as guys who could potentially be moved. I don't think playoff strivers will be looking to part with their 1Cs, so you can strike Larkin and Filip Forsberg. I've seen some speculation about Thompson and Tuch out of Buffalo but in both cases that would depend on how sick they are of being there. I dunno. Trades are funny and hard to predict and I do think it'll take a hockey trade to get a decent center who isn't a million years old.

Manson? For a team that was concerned about Pesce losing speed, I can't see them moving for an even slower guy in their Top 4.

Thompson and Tuch have 5 team no-trade clauses, Thompson’s kicks in on July 1. Tuch is going into his walk year, theoretically the price would be lower. Tuch is more of a wing, he only took 188 face offs and won 41%. Thompson wasn’t much better, 42.8% on 704 face offs. But that’s a teachable skill, size can’t be taught.

Neck injuries are the worst...cervical spine issues I would not wish on anyone as I sit here daily and deal with my own crap and pain, I know hockey comes with risks but Gudbranson mashing Fast into the boards in a meaningless game 82 just sucks for the guy because from all accounts, Quickie was the best teammate and a great bottom six role player with lots of value to provide any team throughout his career.
