It's been a long four years, the return of the magic number thread

If you guys recall, the last time we won the Cup we were dreadful over the last 10 games of the regular season. I think we went 3-7. I remember winning the last game of the season in Buffalo in OT and it was like we’d won the Cup on the ice. Just sayin’

Actually the last 2 times we won it. In 1985-86 we practically limped into the playoffs. Our last 11 games featured a 6 game losing streak, followed by a tie, before we won 3 of the last 4.

See, good omens?
You are forgetting the most important thing, however.

In both 86 and 93 there was no re-seeding after each round so if some mediocre team managed to upset a higher seed in another series, you got to play that shit team in the next round instead of one that might be better than you.

In 86 we finished 2nd in the Adams behind Quebec, who had beaten us the year before. We swept Boston in the best of 5 first round but instead of having to play the Nordiques, we got the Cinderella Whalers instead. Even then it took 7 games plus overtime to prevail. Then, in the conference final round, instead of having to face the Flyers (who would beat us the following year) we got to play another Cinderella team that was in over its head in the Rangers.

Then in the final, instead of having to face the once and future champs from Edmonton, we got the Flames instead thanks to Steve Smith's own goal in the deciding game.

If that run happens today we would never get to benefit like that. As the lowest seed we would be pitted against the highest remaining seed no matter what.

In 93 our only scare was Quebec in round 1. After that, we had home ice the rest of the way, facing the Sabres instead of the Bruins and the Isles instead of the defending champs from Pittsburgh.

No, the biggest difference was that we already had a playoff spot clinched before we ended the regular season poorly.

I think we get in….we’ll get a point from Canes, or Columbus will end up in OT/SO.

But regardless, if this isn’t backing into the playoffs, i dunno what is….
Just buy your tickets give the game reports and enjoy the ride.

In other words, shut up and dribble

it is bracketed now so you are wrong again. When we get in, if we beat Washington, we would get Hurricanes or Devils, regardless of whether the Leafs are the 2nd seeded team

i think we get a point tomorrow…and clinch….i won’t allow myself to believe we cannot get at least 1 pt tomorrow.

Damage is already done btw, even if we clinch….the goal was to rest the star players tomorrow before the playoffs….now they will have to play tomorrow so we clinch, and we will enter playoffs with an already exhausted group of players…guys are barely skating on fumes right now
