Ivan Demidov - Montreal Canadien

I get you are a Russophobe but damn, is there anyone who doesn't like money?
Russia is a kleptocracy. It runs on graft and corruption. That means that if you want something done, the quickest way to make it happen is a brown envelope full of cash. And thanks to Putin's forever war in the Ukraine, his economy is in free fall and rubles are basically suitable only to wipe your ass with now. US dollars, despite what Trump is doing, are still what gets shit done. Geoff has access to as much of that as it will take to get Demidov the hell out of that shithole. There's simply no excuse why he has to stay there another minute. Just pay whoever you have to pay and get him here.

I wasn't giving you an opportunity to slide politics into a hockey thread. I simply asked who doesn't like money.

To paraphrase David Mamet, everyone likes money, that's why they call it "money". The issue is that handing over a brown envelope full of cash is a bribe, which is patently illegal in most civilized countries. Fortunately for the Habs, Russia is not one of those civilized countries so if they really want Demidov there's a pretty simple way to make it happen; a way that (legally) would not be available to them if Demidov were playing in any other league.

You do know this is against NHL rules right?
Bribery is against most rules, but the NHL would have to prove it and would have to care enough to try. Demidov is going to make the NHL a lot of money. The sooner he's over here the sooner the money starts rolling in. If the Rangers owned Demidov's rights he'd already be in Manhattan.

The longer the Habs wait around, the higher the potential for Demidov to be disappeared into an infantry brigade on the steppe. HuGo needs to stop treating this like the kid is playing in the Swedish Elite League. This is Russia where what is a certainty today is a "I have no idea what you're talking about. Ivan who?" tomorrow.

Get him the hell out of there.
