Juraj Slafkovsky, Montreal Canadien

8th ranking just before the Olympics started

There was some discussion among FCHockey’s scouts about where Juraj Slafkovsky fits into this top-10. Some wanted him much higher and he may end up there as the draft approaches. He can protect pucks with his frame and his hands, he's so fast in open ice, he can stickhandle, shoot and pass at his top speed. It looks like there’s a lot of room for development in his game that will inevitably require patience to reach, but he could end up being one of the best players in this class.

it doesn't say that at all...this move says they care more about long term ceiling than floor...and they also agree with a bunch of scouts who think Wright is nice but lacks the wow factor.
Good thing Wright is out of the conference and on a team that is years away from being good

I thought McGuire made an interesting comment after Slaf was selected by Habs - Craig Ramsey opened up the system for Team Slovakia focused around Slaf being the play driver, and his game thereafter picked up at Olympics, that confidence then carried over in return to Liiga, and WC

i think MSLs concept could be the wild card in further developing Slaf’s game.

I’d like to hear why Arizona passed on Wright too.
I think there are two things:

1- There might be teams that think he may have plateaued and his lack of progression is concerning.
2- His lack of compete, for someone who prides himself on having a full 200 foot game, is concerning.

We shall revisit this in three years.

Well I have my doubts on Slafkovsky and I wanted Wright but now, Slaf is a habs so I hope he proves me wrong and he gets to be the player we need him to be. We move on and hope for the best now. I'll be rooting for him.

I think it's a third choice after reading a bunch of articles. GMS went for higher ceilings than floors. Wright had the highest projected floor but not the highest ceiling. Cooley is a swing for the fences.

I felt Wright was the pick to make. Slafkovaky is huge for 18. The potential is intriguing.
My buddy was there two nights ago and had a long conversation with the prospects, he felt Wright had the correct demeanor but Slaf is just a monster. Already thick and big. Kid in a 25 year old body. Throw in his jovial attitude and swagger? The Habs bit which is actually refreshing considering they usually go with the boring guys on purpose.

The OHL in general suffered at this draft thanks to Covid. I think only 2 of their players were selected in Round 1.

In Habs World, pre-Gorton/Hughes, "boring" = "ka-RACK-ter"
