Kirby Dach, Montreal Canadien

Plenty of time to figure it out
If he doesn't become good, he's overpaid, if he does, we have to pay him as a UFA. I don't see the upside, except if he becomes elite this season or next and we get him on the cheap for 3-4 years, but it seems unlikely.

The market and his play will dictate his next contract

An average KD at 3.36 mil is not overpaid , thats what slugs like Byron and Armia make .

If this contract only took him to arbitration his performance dictates the next move

If he nets 50+ points its a steal and if he leaves I make this deal any day of the week for a Romy caliber player .

This move has Gorton leveraging Chris Boucher’s analytics written all over it..

HuGo don’t view this as a “ gamble”, it’s clear they view Dach as a given under MSLs concept, hence, the contract term (buy low deal)

I'm perfectly fine with this.

By the time his contract is up, we should be (theoretically) on the upswing and this contract isn't going to be the difference between being able to sign someone & not.

And even if he doesn't pan out and he's a flop, who cares? We're not going to be good these next four years.

bingo , he is also part of the new wave of the rebuild

I cant see him being a flop

Looks like we are paying a lot for potential but based on performance this is way too much.
Again, if it doesn't work, who cares?

We're not a contending team, trying to figure out the best ways to improve the team by maximizing capspace. We're at the bottom of the league and we're trying to figure out ways to get rid of older players.

If it works, great. We got ourselves a probable #2/#3 center. If it doesn't work, his contract will be up by the time we've drafted enough players that we're entering the stage or where the Sens are at the moment.

General rule: Young players get paid on potential, players approaching UFA get paid on past accomplishments

Dach deal is no different than MBs signing of Pacioretty, Price & Gallagher as RFAs - all 3-were excellent hometown discounts.

It’s much easier to ink a player with little to no leverage, but when UFA hammer starts approaching…..

Because if ever you wanted to 'trade' him, salary matters if you haven't noticed. Did we even get 1 FA year?
